      Hello everyone,

All of you in the ML community already know me as A.J. I have done some serious soul searching and thought quite a bit about what everyone on here has said. I have been immature and made quite a few mistakes. Too many to count in fact. In the past, I would try to justify or explain why those mistakes were made. Honestly, there really is no justification for my past mistakes and I attribute them to being immature and not thinking things through.

Sometimes rebuilding isn't an option and it is best to start over. I have really poured my heart out in the online IT communities, but many poor decisions have placed me in a negative light among my peers. I think it is best for me to move on past my previous online identity and build a new one based on good decisions moving forward.

I am asking anyone who has a negative opinion of me to at least give me a chance to prove myself and my new decision making moving forward. I know my old online identity will continue to follow me, but I am still young and have a chance to build a new, respected identity. At 22 years old, it's time to grow up and move forward. No excuses and no more looking into the past.

    • [How-To] Access UEB Remotely with VPN Agent on UEB

So I've longed for a way to access my UEB locally via a local browser, basically so I didn't have to RDP to a machine with a GUI and THEN access it. It seems like an odd request, but I did find a way. I hope this is beneficial for anyone.

The trick lies in having a jump server on the same network as your Unitrends box, and using SSH tunnels. I have a jump server that I can access both over the WAN and over my Pertino VPN. You can use either PuTTY or KiTTY for this task. Once you've got the session info all setup, go to Connection > SSH > Tunnels. For the source port, you can technically use anything, but for my example I used 10001. Using something that nothing else will likely be using is a good idea.

The destination will be the IP of your Unitrends box followed by ":443". See example below.
      upload-74af265a-49e8-44c2-a14a-a3cc94022582

Now, in order to access the Unitrends box, open your preferred browser and enter this (based on my example):

      https://localhost:10001/recoveryconsole

If you simply enter https://localhost:100001, it will redirect to the URL you need but drop the :10001 which will not complete the connection, so make sure you keep whatever port you used on there. Bam! That's all you need to do! It's quite handy and I'm realizing how handy SSH tunnels are!

      Thanks!

    • No, I'm not dead

I understand that people have been wondering where I've been, as I took a three-week hiatus, which is not like me. I've had a lot going on in my personal life, and while I respect that this is a professional forum, I thought I'd share a little of that so people had an idea of why I've been gone.

First off, you can always tell when I'm not working a desk job because I disappear from online forums. I don't know why but there's some internal, mental correlation between me working a desk job and posting here or SW. About a month ago, I was no longer employed at my Cisco-shop job. The fault was entirely my own, but I wished they'd let me go to the second shift schedule like I'd asked. A 7AM start time five days a week, five days in a row, was too much for my body, combined with what else I had going on.

Currently, I have no official address. For religious differences, I am not welcomed by anyone (and I do mean ANYONE) in my family. In fact, they will have nothing to do with me. I have been crashing with a co-worker for about a month now. In that time, I've been in the hospital, almost lost my only job for doing nothing wrong, labeled "a threatening presence" by a manager trying to get me fired (who in the end got transferred), and I'm broke. I mean beyond broke.

I have a couple of possible jobs I have a good shot at but they are in FL. Right now, I'm just trying to figure out what my next move is but there are so many variables up in the air I just don't know. But I've been trying to get some things in order and just haven't been posting. Any happy thoughts you care to send my way are much appreciated. Thanks.

    • Back to Texas I Go

So I figured I'd let everyone here know, although those of you who are friends with me on Facebook should already know...

I have made up my mind that I am going to move back to Texas. My original plan was to be there by September 1st, but my GM at my retail job today asked me "you can't stay through back-to-school?" I started to say how I couldn't but then I realized I really have no reason I can't...back to school really ends the Saturday after Labor Day, which also happens to be my birthday... (that's September 12th for our non-US friends)

So now the plan is to move back to Texas after I celebrate my birthday in NY. That will also be a first. I'm sad to leave Upstate NY, and it will always be my home, but I need to move on. I have coordinated a place to stay once I get to Texas and will be working with a dear friend to help get some things in order in my life and my career. I may still end up moving to Georgia for a job but that remains to be seen.

By being in Texas by the 16th or 17th, I will have arrived just in time for Spiceworld! I'm excited for that. I'm also excited to see many of my friends and adopted family again.

Now I know what many of you are thinking: "did you just leave Texas?!" Yes, I was last in Texas on January 28 on this year, which is the day I left. So why go back to Texas? Well, I came back to New York for personal and emotional reasons. There were many things I think I needed closure on and I have obtained them, at least as much as I can.

I hope that Texas will be a chance to start new. The first time I moved I was not ready, in many ways. That has changed a great deal and I'm excited to give Texas another shot. At this point, I'm going to let what happens, happens. I've given up trying to dictate every step of my life and rather guide it when I can and roll with it when I can't.

Look out Texas, I'm coming back for Round Two!

    • Recover MySQL Database

Ok, so here's my issue...I goofed. I had my website running on my CloudatCost server for awhile, but I've requested my money back from them via Paypal. So I've moved back to using the server I host myself as my main server. Well, I forgot I had a script setup on my CloudatCost server that exported the databases from that server and SCP'ed them to my local server. Then I had a script setup combined with a cron job to automatically import them.

I wrote two articles on Thursday, May 8th. The articles were written between 10AM and 2PM. I have Unitrends backup my local server every day at 7AM and 7PM. The cron job to import them runs at 4AM and 4PM. Originally the backup was designed to make sure it had the latest. The problem is I wrote the articles on my LOCAL server, which means when it imported the SQL dumps from the CloudatCost server, it overwrote what I'd done.

I'm trying a restore from Thursday at 7PM on the off chance the connection failed and it didn't overwrite them. My question is if there is some way to do something similar to what VSS does in Windows on Linux. I understand this was entirely my fault and I'm taking steps to correct it, including I've disabled the import cron job on my local server. That being said, is there any possible I can recover that data if my backup doesn't have it? I know the answer is probably no, but if anyone has any ideas I'd love to hear them! Thanks!

    • Scripting SSH Connections to Extract Info from Output

      So here is the scenario...

I need a way, on Ubuntu, to SSH into multiple devices (script it to run one at a time against a list), preferably with a password in the command, run one command, and exit. Right now I got the command working, but it prompts for a password each time, and you have to enter each IP manually. I'm sure you can use a list using a variable or a shell script somehow but I wasn't sure how you'd do it. Basically this is the command:

      ssh domain/username@IP 'show int <interface> | inc <info to extract>'

So what I need is a way to include a password in the command and use a variable to run the command against a list of IPs. We can log the output to a text/log file. That's fine. If there was a way to do it to a CSV, that'd be even better. This is a sample output:

      						 ACCESS OF A PRIVATE SYSTEM
      <banner message>
Description: <ISP> CKT ID: <the circuit ID here>

      Thanks!

My current address is at a McDonalds here:

Now I wait until 7AM CDT (3:13AM CDT as of this posting) for the Firestone down the road to open to find out what is even wrong with my car and then proceed from there. The McDonalds I'm in is actually closed (the lobby) until 5AM but the women here are being kind and letting me hang out in the lobby.

Sorry to hear that you are broke down. It's not fun. Hopefully it will be something rather simple and you will be on your way pretty quickly.

Note to self: kill PSX when I see him next...
