In the US at least, Scott is correct - these places don't care about repeat sales, they only care about this one sale today. Specialty stores care about repeat business, but big box stores.. nah.. they know there are 10 more people behind you looking to buy something.

Well it isn't that they don't want repeat sales. It is that there are many factors:

Many (most) customers never evaluate the advice that they were given to see if it was good so are just taken advantage of over and over again. Switching stores would mean admitting their own mistakes of the past and most people would rather make the same mistake twice and claim it was not a mistake than to fix their behaviour and not make the mistake again. There might not be other stores available or they may have no idea where to go.

I hate Best Buy, but sometimes they are what is around. But I never ask them for advice, that would be ridiculous, obviously they have no idea about cables, audio equipment, computers, whatever. They know less than random people on the street in most cases.

We use Sophos I love it...

I'm stuck with it on my Mac. And that means no AV at all since it doesn't run. No one appears to have AV working because they have a Sophos contract and it just doesn't run. For half the people I've seen, it just doesn't fire up. For the other half, it crashes out.

Our's runs fine I'm not sure what your IT is doing wrong. We some mac too and it works okay on them. you have to manually configure them to tie into the Enterprise Console and Internal Update Servers. On Domain PCs this is all automated.

are you talking windows end users or mac end users?

      We have both.

      Nuked by humans....Nuked by Skynet.

      Is there an alternative?

Human engineered super virus that is accidentally released? eg. Captain Trips.

Thanks a type of nuking. I figured when @Breffni-Potter said Nuked by humans...Nuked by Skynet, on the humans side he meant more self annihilation, not necessarily nuking, i.e. nuking, super virus, create a black hole that destroys the planet, etc.

Yeah.... no comments on that at all.. I pretty much whole heartedly agree. Life is too short to waste it on petty things that ultimately don't matter.

I'm also quite late, but would it be appropriate to keep passwords in files with root permissions and have the script read it? Or is that just as insecure?

At some point, passwords need to exist. In most cases, you want to use keys, though. Where do you need passwords?

I was just asking if that would be a solution to the original problem while still being secure since he couldn't use keys.

Oh, in that case, they aren't concerned about security or they'd have keys. So being really secure isn't on their radar šŸ™‚

They can be either. The only time you care about them is when they increment up. I once had an ATM circuit increment OAM frame errors in the 10K a second, guy was complaining about slow speed.

Only way to find out which is which is to perform testing from the telco side. Lock the port, run an MLT, see what happens. Then test the smartjack for errors. Then look at CPE.

Agreed. They just mean you have errors. It doesn't tell you where they are at.

If you have a boss that is interested in developing you as an individual, take this to them without making it about the coworker. Ask them something like, "Hey, I got some feedback from a coworker that I don't consult enough with my peers. What is your take on that, and do you have any suggestions for how I can be a better tech/coworker?"

Kelly, I will do just that if it becomes necessary. As it is, every time I start talking, this co-worker stops what they're doing and turns and looks at me. It's getting kind of creepy actually.

That makes it easier. But you will still need the proper virtualization licenses for WIndows 7.

A lot of places restrict the allowed characters because they're morons who don't understand SQL injection and think it's a way to avoid it. Ideally any character should be allowed that can be transferred over HTTP without breaking the hell out of things, which is everything which can be properly encoded.

I do trim passwords though, something old school jackasses think is bad, because after all, if there's a space at the beginning or end of a password, or a newline/return character, it must be on purpose, despite the fact that 99.9999999999% of the time it's because someone copy/pasted the password from an email or something and accidentally added on the space/\r/\n. Of course you can make the argument of never sending a password in an email (and we don't), but tell that to users who will do it all day long.

I also wrote a method to deal with "easy" passwords, things like repeating words, pattern recognition for phone numbers, birthdates, etc.
