RE: Small Business Server 2003 to 2012 R2 Migration and Virtualized Domain Controller Questions

It's been nine months since the last update. Where are things now with this?
We are running quite well, thanks to everyone who helped out. Since The day we went live back in late March, beyond windows updates, I've only had to reboot the host twice due to "slowness" issues...it has been rock solid and totally love it...and thanks @scottalanmiller for encouraging me and talking me into virtualizing...

So far, I am liking what I see...some "coolness" factor is coming back...and I am one of the 3% that simply prefer the Windows Phone/Mobile...

SQL Server on a VM
I am considering running SQL Server on a Hyper-V VM. I've heard pros and cons for both. It isn't a heavily accessed SQL server. Primarily, it hosts Microsoft Dynamics Great Plains 2010 and we have some tables that several spreadsheets use to grab some data.
Just wondering what the experience has been like...thanks...

It's 2AM CST...I am in the middle of a Dynamics GP2015 upgrade. As always with this blasted product, nothing ever goes as smooth as the consultant says to do. NOTHING...and the blasted product won't uninstall...getting errors there...he won't wake up even when he said "call anytime." GP users expecting to use new GP2015 by 7AM CST

I'm waiting to hear what Apple announces tomorrow.
I'll be watching...especially since most of the staff here prefers iPhones for the simple fact it doesn't change much from year to year.
I'm one of the 1% that still prefers Windows Phone but I know it is just too hard to support anymore.

RE: Printing on Wax Paper

Mark this down as one of the most unusual requests in a while...office manager needs me to print to wax paper so they can rub it off on to another kind of paper...I've run it through my inkjet a few times...first time it jammed...the last three times it did pull it through and print but lightly and the 4th time it jammed...
Anyone ever have to do this? And if so, any tips? A search didn't turn up much help...
That is purely why my wife wanted a new Inkjet. Ink dried up in the last printer because we never used it.
It's a crafting 'task' of sorts. I've not had much luck with it myself,.. but some have. You can't just use the wax paper. you have to use another sheet of paper as a carrier. You'll need to tape the wax paper to the carrier.
We have a circa late 90's HP color InkJet still in the office and it handled it well...unbelievable...

@garak0410 Can you roll back?
It might be worth starting again rather than trying to salvage a failed upgrade.Everything is good now...just unexpected error messages that were the results of him leaving off a step or two in the install instructions.

Sharepoint Online - Anyone Using It??
We are nearing our one year anniversary of being on Exchange Online having some on the Office 365 Enterprise E1 Plan and some on Exchange Online Plan 1. It has been a major win for us in stability and maintenance.
We also have SharePoint Online that I've not touched at all. I've poked around in it but never have found a use for it.
I was curious to know if anyone here uses it regularly and how you use it...we really don't need much file sharing as our main file server does that. But didn't know what else we can do with it and if we can make it point back to our main, local file server.

@Dashrender I don't understand why not just let the client connect to the cloud storage and download the files you want to edit, and then automagically upload them every time you save?
Exactly...this is how the Windows 8.1 placeholder version worked more or less...but you had options to always sync (available offline) or online only...
I guess the fix is not to update my Venue 8 Pro to 10 right away until a solution comes back. Why Microsoft brags about how you get this cloud storage on low storage devices and then makes it impossible to get is frustrating.

Has Office 2016 gone live yet? I thought that was next week?
Yessir...purchased it via the Microsoft Store and my Office 365 Home accounts all got it today. I just need the latest Skype for Business client.
Funny story and long story made short...I had to use Chrome to get the Office 2016 Professional (standalone) on my work PC today. Kept giving errors with Edge. LOL

Cannot Remote Connect to SQL Server
I almost feel like noob for posting this but poking around and searching for an answer hasn't solved my problem.
It's been about 3 years or more since I set up a new SQL server. I've done that now and it works fine but I cannot remote to it via another application that wants to set up a DB to it or via SQL Management Studio.
I've opened suggested ports of 1433 and 1434. The named instances is set to allow remote connections and it is set for SQL and Windows Authentication. I've looked at over 10 website with suggestions and I still can't get that remote connection open.
No anti-virus or third party firewall on the SQL server either.
Almost hate to press Submit because I know it may be a "duh" answer but can't for the life of me remember how to get this going.
Thanks...

I'm still playing Fallout 76 on the XBOX. Despite the bad press, I've been patient with the bugs and I'm really enjoying the experience of the game. Up to Level 44 with just occasional playing when I have time.
I love the idea of a prequel, but I'm so not into online gaming, I stick to single player experiences because I just can't commit the time.
The most interesting thing about Fallout 76 being an Online game is there is no pressure to play "online"...The "online" aspect seems to be more content related, map expansions, etc. For me, it feels like a never ending single player game. I play in non-combat mode meaning when I see others online, most of the time, we stop and wave at each other, trade or help complete an event...and you can use other peoples camp's for repair and rest...it is the most "relaxed" online game I've played...

Android Fans - Note 5 or Nexus 6P
Android Fans...I've decided to leave my beloved Windows Phone and back to Android. If you had your choice, would you get the Note 5 or Nexus 6P? I have that option. I am using the Note 5 now and like it and have used the Stylus a lot. My past experience with Android was with Samsung and TouchWiz and the phones always lagged over time. I hope that isn't the case with the Note 5. The idea of a pure Android OS on the 6P sounds appealing and I might be willing to live without Stylus and wireless charging. The "bloat" on the Samsung doesn't concern me but wish I really could hide the Verizon stuff. Not sure if camera is a major stop down on the Nexus 6P either.
Thoughts? Thanks...

Watching the Apple Event...and I'm a Microsoft / Android guy...
So which existing, old technologies are they adding to their new stuff this year? They always seem to be a decade behind android on so many things.
I try to be objective with the Apple Announcements since the senior staff prefers iPhones but so far, I've seen nothing earth shattering...
All iPhones have been announced...seems like they have matched the Note Series and Pixel Phones on some abilities on the Camera...and they have simplified the naming convention: .iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro MAX. They will continue to sell the XR and iPhone8 in the coming year.
Interesting - they are keeping the iPhone 8.... is that because it's the last phone with a fingerprint reader?
Likely because many people don't / can't spend <1000 for a f***** phone so they need a low end model to sell to the masses.
Or overstock of iPhone 8's and XR's perhaps?

Android Wear Vs. Gear S2 (Tizen)
Any Android Smartwatch users out there? I am considering one. I have the Band 2 and it works fine with Android but always found it awkward to wear and always have to turn my head to read it.
I am demoing a Gear S2 and so far it is nice but didn't know what I gain/lose by not going to Android Wear. Any suggestions?
My main features are notifications, fitness (steps, it alerting me to get up and walk, etc.) and battery life.
Thanks...
