Not looking for RSS feeds, just custom text that she can manually input and would scroll at the bottom of the screen for employee's to see throughout the day.

RSS would be a good input method for that, though.

Yeah, he is not listening to a damned thing. the best thing to do would be to use an RSS ticker and just whip out a quick RSS formatted file someplace that can be edited.

Doing something custom on the machine is just stupid.

I posted long ago that I found a solution but JB was upset I didn't do RSS... Hence this thread going way out of control.

If the solution you found is good enough for your boss, Screw @JaredBusch. Of course that said - when you boss comes back and wants you to roll this out company wide (or at least more than just one computer), You, the IT person will likely like the RSS solution to this.

I don't mind that. And I don't mind learning. It just seemed like someone's feelings were hurt. 😃

Will the RSS feed stay at the bottom like the photo showing the one I found does?

That depends on the particular ticker. That it is RSS feeding it is just the standard format for feeding that kind of data. Doesn't need to be RSS, that's just a simple format commonly associated with this kind of thing.

But it is two different things, one is the ticker that displays something (generally RSS) and the RSS which is just a text file for populating list data.

      Got it.

For this purpose it needs to be one that will sit on the bottom of the screen and sit between the task bar and a "Whiteboard" that will constantly change. Maybe this will help make sense.

That's why a post it won't work. It needs to allow the program to be up and running and scroll the text at the same time.

    • Ubiquity Unifi AP

I have been converted to using Ubiquity Unifi AP's (from this group).

However I have a client that just needs one AP. Since they require a bit more setup than others (the Unifi Controller) is there another brand that would be better in this situation?

@ccwtech said in Ubiquity Security appliance:

      1. I have always had a different AV on the gateway that I run on the endpoints. Wouldn't that increase the likelihood of blocking a threat?

Yes, it does. But it's a point of diminishing returns. AV on the gateway comes at great cost, whereas normal AV is cheap or free. Good, normal AV is blocking essentially all threats. Why, suddenly after decades of no one even considering AV at the gateway, are we now concerned with it when AV is less useful today than ever, and less important. Threats of viruses are pretty minor today, that's not a major attack vector like it was twenty years ago.

It seems like a generally odd place to suddenly spend huge amounts of money to protect against essentially nothing, when so many other, cheaper, more effective things would never get considered.

So the big $1,000 question is... how much dollar value is there in that additional layer of security?

Makes sense. Given my size clients and the fact that the Ubiquity security gateway would be in the same controller as the Unifi AC Pro access points, I think I may look more into that.

I've done a little bit of reading about COVID-19 (the new Coronavirus)... It seems to me that everybody is panicking simply because it's new?

It's new and so far it's deadlier and more infectious then the flu that we are used to.

There have been 2 cases of it in Georgia (and another 200 people being monitored for it), and the University system is already prepping to shut down, just, so it seems. I feel like it's a bit of a knee-jerk reaction.

Not to belittle your stance here, but viruses are known to change pretty consistently (flu does so every year) and those changes could cause all sorts of things. Like cause tumors or bleeding from your eyes or anything else.

This is a valid reaction to the spread of this virus, if anything a bit of an underwhelming reaction to it.

If it changed that much every year, we'd all be dead by now.

      Heads up -

I'm getting a ton of calls this morning for network issues with the Intel l219-LM card. I think patch Tuesday 'effed something up.

Loading the current drivers isn't working so I found a legacy driver to get clients back online.

      https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/18713/Ethernet-Intel-Network-Adapter-Driver-for-Windows-7-?product=82185

I haven't seen this, are you approving Windows Updates for Drivers?

      Yes.

I never do that because of this, I let the hardware vendors provide the updates. Also it downloads unnecessary updates to the WSUS server.

I don't use WSUS, but I get your point.

I see, so it is downloading the optional updates from windows update.

I use Ninja RMM... I need to check with them if that is turned on or not.

How often do you reboot your Windows servers? (I know there are limitless use types and each use may warrant a different answer, but just generally...)

Do you automate the process? If so do you just use scheduled tasks or something more?

They are in Nicaragua where the economy has collapsed from both the war and COVID so times are very tough there. Even a small amount makes a big difference. Thanks.

it's a shame the Original owners of Screenconnect sold themselves out, but these buyouts normally end up making the product twice as expensive without any decent further development.
