tactical wargame mechanics of DnD 4e (or so I've been told)
Yeah, they pretty much ripped it die roll for die roll from 4e from the people I've talked to.
The combat system was the thing I (and most gamers) hated the most about 4e.
This was quite a bit of fun. I'm not a minis and hexes gamer typically so I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I think it made a huge difference with how the mechanics of the various mechs worked out. It is a very tightly designed game. No one felt over powered compared to the rest, we ended up winning both scenarios, but it was by very narrow margins.
I've heard good things about Lancer to be honest. I'd like to try it at some point. I think the mechanics need to fit the setting and they do a much better job in this instance.
Mechanics need to fit intent. I have a hard time believing that the 4e need for pre-configuring grid based battles can be reconciled reasonably with any sort of decent narrative experience.
Curious how they try to handle the core rules being inherently incompatible with one of their stated goals.
It takes some work to wrap your mind around if you're more used to narrative systems. We played a quick encounter that was just mechs on a hex grid so that we could learn the mechanics and figure out how the rules worked. Once we got done we sat back and looked at each other and said "That was great, but I am having trouble wrapping my mind around how this connects with narrative." It took some time to get that sorted in our own heads, but it was doable. I found that once I had fully fleshed out my pilot that I was able to integrate the narrative into the tactical system. I think it just takes the right group of players.
Maybe 4e was the wrong comparison. I haven't played it, so I can't make an accurate comparison.

Eh, when narrative gets dropped in the description of an RPG I have a tendency to go straight into gamist, simulationist, narrativist analysis mode(which is probably considered outdated at this point anyway). They may not mean what I'm thinking when I see that.
Anyway, I had fun playing 4e once I got over it not being what I expected from previous iterations of D&D. I suspect there's some good juice to be wrung from a game using a similar system to run giant robot fights.

Nothin good ever came out of 4e. period.

Cool, I used to play the heck out of that stuff and Tribes

Bought my wife a copy of Titan Quest... bad idea Still a great game which supports LAN-only multiplayer - sadly, most older games don't play well with with virtual NICs from Hyper V and Docker Desktop.
-
One of many games I randomly play.

@black3dynamite sounds like quake?

Some games are based on quake or inspired by quake gameplay. Also this game is available on Linux, Windows and Mac.

Finally bought RDR2 and have been playing Online a bit. There is no greater feeling than spawning into a session just to immediately get shot in the head, told your username is stupid, and called a pussy by someone who sounds like their father and uncle are the same person. Game looks great though! Really loving the hunting & fishing aspect.
I haven't played online and I only have about 4 hours into the story mode... but I'm not loving it so far. Everything feels really clunky to me for some reason. I'm not used to holding a certain key vs. tapping it for a different result. I also hate how slow looting is; I understand it's intentionally that way, but I still don't like it. It's a beautiful game, and I want to love it, but it might just not be the right game for me.

More like D2 or PoE. The interesting aspect is that you can combine two classes, like rogue + mage or rune + defender.

To be fair Titan Quest doesn't hold a candle to PoE. No hack n' slash really does. Before POE it was an incredible interpretation of the genre though. Thoroughly enjoyed it

haha, no, absolutely not. PoE is a hell of a game with the most complex skill tree ever.

Yeah it's really insane what they have done and over the years it has just gotten better. What a rarity

I guess you aren't talking about Power over Ethernet?
