I am running X11 on Ubuntu 22.10. First of all, I am not sure if I should really care that I am not using Wayland. I don't know how much of a big deal it is or if I should just be happy things seem to be working well.

I AM Running Nvida for video - I have seen in the past where this MAY be a cause but I don't know if that is still true.

On the login screen, I do NOT have a gear icon so I can choose the session I want to use for some reason.

The only edit that I have made is that in grub I changed this line:

      GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="text nomodeset"

      1. I like having the text on bootup instead of the regular screen because, I think it looks cool. Yeah, I know... Silly but I like it.
      2. The nomodeset is required because without it it gets stuck on boot... An issue with NVIDIA.

So I am not sure if it's a big deal or not it's just weird to me that in previous versions of Ubuntu I did see I could change.

I did this in the past, but not sure how relevant it is for you here?

I've just been gaming on Windows lately, bottom line is it's just easier and less time consuming for some of the games I play. So it's dependant on that.

I don't think you should care, really -- as long as your stuff is working how you want it to.

I prefer X11 still because of support for things like VNC and such. When Wayland gets that ironed out good, I may consider switching again.

Kinda what I was thinking but my OCD makes me think of it as 'broken'... LOL. Thanks!

If I'm honest, that's the way I feel about Wayland. It's new, it's exciting, but one of the main things I've come to expect from any computing platform is remote control. AFAIK, Even VNC doesn't work on Wayland yet.

I think they're getting closer though. Gnome has a Remote Desktop thing you can activate under Sharing, and it actually works half decently -- and works with a regular RDP client. The problem is that you have to be logged in, and can't let the screen lock. It works more akin to VNC rather than along the lines of Terminal Services.

The info below is from Debian but should be the same under Ubuntu.

GDM (GNOME Display Manager) will automatically use Wayland when supported, except when using the proprietary NVIDIA driver, in which case it will fall back to X11 due to instability.

To use the X11 backend by default, uncomment the WaylandEnable=false line in the /etc/gdm3/daemon.conf file.

It is using NVIDIA Drivers so that must be why. Thanks!

I just confirmed that mine is working on the default Fedora 37 desktop using both Firefox and Chromium.

                          Wayland with MeshCentral?

You SURE you are on Wayland?

AFAIK, Even VNC doesn't work on Wayland yet.

                                      Nor does MeshCentral

                                      No reason to guess:
