I've done a little bit of reading about COVID-19 (the new Coronavirus)... It seems to me that everybody is panicking simply because it's new?
It's new and so far it's deadlier and more infectious then the flu that we are used to.
There have been 2 cases of it in Georgia (and another 200 people being monitored for it), and the University system is already prepping to shut down, just, so it seems. I feel like it's a bit of a knee-jerk reaction.
Not to belittle your stance here, but viruses are known to change pretty consistently (flu does so every year) and those changes could cause all sorts of things. Like cause tumors or bleeding from your eyes or anything else.
This is a valid reaction to the spread of this virus, if anything a bit of an underwhelming reaction to it.

I don't feel belittled at all, so no worries... and yeah the bugs change up quite often.
Like cause tumors or bleeding from your eyes or anything else.
Fortunately, I've never heard of the flu doing this... but the new one hasn't been around long yet and my eye has been a bit itchy the las 30 minutes or so).

Maybe knee-jerk was the wrong word pick, because I don't think it's an invalid reaction. I think it's just a lot stronger than I expected.
Edit: I found out that GA is up to 6 confirmed cases a litle bit ago.

The issues seen in Italy:
New virus: no cure you are on your own. Too weak means you die.
Reason you die: std side effects of unthreated flu on weak people (mostly old people etc..). Covid being able to go deeper in the lungs causing primary type pneumonia (primary=directly caused by virus not by the weakening and by subsequent bacteria installation) which is dangerous even for young people.Main issues: high diffusivity rate, high number of people to require machines to breath. Not enough machines in Italy.
Basically covid is more dangerous than flu but not so dangerous. Unfortunately the sizing of our hospital facilities is not enough to host all the people in need. Therefore, before we have to let people selectively die, government has imposed a quarantine.

This is asinine as no known influenza or corona virus strain has ever done anything of the sort.
While the influenza changes yearly, it is still able to be categorized into 4 strains, and only 2 of those 4 strains are part of the "yearly flu"

If it changed that much every year, we'd all be dead by now.

I don't get flu shot because I'm scared shitless of needles.
I'm probably being an idiot too,
You are. Get a shot every year and your perspective will be different. You would instead be saying you got the flu 2 times in XX years of getting flu shots.
Our family is a generally healthy family and we get flu shots yearly. It is free (well paid as part of our health insurance premium). Have I ever gotten the flu with a flu shot? No. Have my kids? Yes, in different years, not at the same time. Have I gotten the flu in years past (prior to marriage & kids) with and without a flu shot? Yes to both.

The Chive reported last night how the US is suppressing Covid-19 reports and how there are very few tests and people are being turned away in droves, including health care workers exposing other people.
Very possible that the infection rate in the US is orders of magnitude higher than is being reported because of the laundry list of things required to have in order to "qualify" has having it.
Accurate numbers would require every person in the world with cold or flu like symptoms to be tested, and this is just not realistic. Most will not even realize it's Corvid19. It's really just a matter of time before we all get it. Nothing to do about it.
My guess is that most of the reported cases are the worst cases, still not an accurate number to start generalizing with. I want to see the age group data of all reported cases.
Correct, because Covid 19, like all coronavirus strains generally present mild respiratory tract infections. But, yes, respiratory tract. So not breathing can be a bad thing.
Yes, Covid 19 is worse than the SARS and MERS strains were.
No the fucking world is not ending.Yes, Covid 19 is much deadlier among the older/vulnerable population than SAR and MERS were.
