I think that's your best bet honestly. It can also be quite profitable. Yeah there's some work involved, but it's easy to lowball on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace

Hey there! I finally found and decided where to spend this spare $500 of mine. I know you guys proved to me that it's just a very small amount, it's not ideal to use this and buy small business on Flippa, not even worth using to start a small IT Business(actually, not enough), and not even worth using to start a blog site('coz you don't know when you can get your investment back because monetization is very hard). I agree to all of you and thanks for that. Now, where I'm gonna use it? I thought about investing it on stock market, but, I don't think I can get that much from it.
So, I decided investing it to myself, yup you read it right.
$50 will go to Udemy courses, I think that's enough since they are always on sale, one course could probably cost around $12.00 only. I already have skill set to use for a freelance work but I thought eating more knowledge would help me more on my career, and I want more and more knowledge('coz it's me :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: ). While doing so, I'll create a profile in Upwork and will avail their $10/month Freelance plus plan and thinking about getting a year worth of subscription, so a total of $120.
After that, I'm going to avail a year of subscription on wordpress and build a landing page for my upwork profile. That will be around $60 for a Personal plan.
So the total is now at $185. I still have $315 left, which I probably be using to buy Connects on upwork ($1/connect), it's like a token in-site so I can submit a proposal to possible clients.
I know this is not something that I can say a good use of $500 but I'd say, it is a good move. Once I get my profile approved (might take weeks) in Upwork, I'm gonna open another thread and update you there until I land my first freelance work. :smiling_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I like the idea of training, but paying for upwork seems silly? I've worked there a few years ago and that was never a thing. It was free and clients pi ked you based on your portfolio and reviews.

Wow looks like a racket to to me. Not sure why they have to do this since they ake a fee from actual hours worked. They probably only do this to exploit the poor and unqualified talent which is extremely prevalent on these freelance sites.
The amount of useless talent is unreal on there. I wouldn't pay, I'd just do good work to stand out. Because free and paid members still have the same ability to create proposals. If your proposal is better than everyone else's proposal then you get the job, right?

I've done a couple of jobs on Upwork and gotten paid for the work I did. It's not terrible, but I'll echo @JaredBusch 's comments... there's a lot of crap to wade through no matter which side of the fence you are on.

We all know another place to get WP hosting.. <cough>hostadillo</cough>
If you are going to use a WP site, I assum that means you want to learn more about customizing WP, etc. Well doing it on WP.com is my last choice.
If you are going to tinker with really learning, you need it in a VPS. You can spin that up on Vultr for the same $60/year.
Then you can use their snapshot functionality to totally let you break shit.

Remember you are in high cost Canada now, places like Upwork are really designed for the super low cost third world locations. The idea is to drive to the bottom. In Canada, you'll easily cost too much to ever find work, or earn so little that it's not worth your time.

I don't like it because of the model. It is handy for really discrete, low cost, low skill projects. But those are so rare, and anything serious you can't really trust through it because you lack all of the structure of a real business relationship.

Being located out of Canada is definitely an advantage on Upwork. The amount of horribly under-qualified people in India and Southeast Asia is unreal. Most employers on there will avoid those regions because literally 99% of them have absolutely no clue how to do basic functions let alone actual IT work. They have no issue lying to try to make any amount of money possible. You have a job that you want pay $10 in labor for, people that have no clue how to do that simple task will apply. Then they will lie to you in the application process. Then they will lie during the job, and just delay and ask for money. I have seen it on their a bunch for cheap jobs.
One of the best things you can do is keep your rate reasonably high. The higher your rate is on there, the more likely you are to obtain work. Maybe take on your first job or two at a cheap rate, but DO NOT WORK for pennies like these scam artists do. If anything it's a huge red flag

It is great when you find somebody well qualified for tasks that take a few hours. It is absolutely fantastic for that.
As I explained in my post, finding actual humans beings that are worth the pennies they ask for is the difficult part. LOL
