MangoCon 2019

  • Anyone from the west coast, especially out of Portland going? I am considering it.

Don't know of anyone else from Oregon yet. I know that @Obsolesce is San Diego and @wrx7m is Oxnard. I know that Ob is attempting to make it at least.

@Romo is coming and is west coast, but farther south. As is @MarigabyFrias. Both are very close to the Pacific coast.

  • Is there any cost for bringing a guest? I would love to bring the wife. I doubt she would be interested in the tech, just a vacation.

I was wondering about that as well. I'll probably be bringing the girlfriend unit if I'm able to attend.

  • Google maps used to tell me how long it would take to get to the US routed via Indonesia, Japan, Hawaii, and landing in Washington state... by Kayak. I think it used to be 3 months(?).

Now it's boring and won't tell me. Sorry, we could not calculate driving directions from "$Location "to "Dallas, Texas, USA"
Google: no longer the source of all knowledge.

At least Google tells me the distance and flight time... unlike busted Bing: The distance between one or more waypoints is too long to calculate directions. Try getting directions for shorter distances.

  • @nadnerb Right? It used to tell you to get from China to Japan via jetski, but...unfortunately...it is no longer entertaining. It is just a tool, in both sense of the word.

We hadn't really thought about this yet, because let's face it, nobody's main squeeze was interested in going to Rochester, NY 😃

  • @dominica Never been to Rochester, but already believes that DFW is a wee bit more appealing than Rochester.

Not really sure they would have ANY interest in going, even it was in an exotic location. Because then they would want to be out on the beach and not in some IT thing.

I know at least one spouse came to Rochester during MangoCon and did touristy things while the IT talks were happening. Can't remember who it was off the top of my head right now.

I don't know if Houston would be more attractive for doing the touristy stuff or not. 2019 will be the first time I'll have been in Houston other than waving while I drive by in a truck.

1-2 hours away depending on how you drive.

Houston is terrible for tourists, and is 4-5 hours away from Dallas. If you went ALL the way to Galveston, then it's good for tourist because of the beaches.

  • @scottalanmiller Hah, thats a commute home for me. Tx is just too large sometimes

Frankly - my wife has no interest in going to Dallas in May either - to bloody hot! plus unless there's a wive's club doing their own thing, she wouldn't be willing to venture out on her own.. and well, at night we'll all be in some bar closing it down.

It's America's first boom town, has loads of speakeasies and cocktail bars (one of the densest in the nation), has loads of museums and historical sites, decent food options if you aren't there for too long, the river, the breweries, and a giant water front.

And... it's actually a upstate NY city that isn't dying. Between it and Buffalo they are actually seeing some population gains.

So, are people moving away from NYC to upstate? I had a couple of opportunities to work in upstate NY while looking for a job, and the tax situation in the state meant that no employer was offering what I'd consider a reasonable rate after figuring in the living expenses, I was better off working at McDonalds in northeastern Ohio.

It was dying for many years, though. It's more of just recovering from the vacuum that got created when Kodak collapsed and Xerox left.
