Self Employed expense tracking
-
For those of you working for yourself or doing more itemized expense tracking for work what do you use? I'm trying to get something that will allow me to deal with receipts and mileage (at least), and I haven't found anything that I've liked out of the free/trial apps out there. I've tried Everlance, Hurdlr, and Quickbooks Self Employed.

I used Wave (https://www.waveapps.com/). For mileage I actually built my own with Drupal but that was just for fun.

That looks really promising. Does it have any mileage tracking? I couldn't find anything in my own poking around.

I don't think. I had already built my own before I started using them so I didn't need it.

You could probably set up a really simple mileage system with airtable.

If you don't mind using your personal tracking device (smartphone) for just the mileage part, everlance is great for that. I've been using it for the past couple of years. It's been very accurate, and lets you export reports. Just keeping on top of classifying everything does take a couple minutes every day.

I've been using Everlance, but it keeps nagging me to improve location accuracy. Kind of annoying since location accuracy is all turned up.

I'll see if I can create one quickly as a test.

Don't put too much into it. I like having my smartphone do most of the work for me at this point. I'm already using location data for mapping and what not, so it makes sense to use it for mileage as well.

Ah ok. Yeah if you want it to be automatic that's the way to go. Here's an Airtable thing I put together in a couple mins.

Here's the backend view for that form:

@stacksofplates That looks pretty straightforward. Thanks for whipping that up. I might have to look at Airtable for some other projects.

Yeah it's not bad. It's good for simple things, expensive when you need to pay though. At that point it's better to just do a full site with Drupal or something.

I found this a bit ago, and looks like you can do all kinds of stuff:
https://wordpress.org/plugins/captainform/It's worth checking out, but for a simple case like yours I'm thinking Drupal might be a better choice like @stacksofplates suggested.

Same waveapps is way better than a lot of the competition.

MileIQ for mileage works great, set it and forget it.
