Best naming strategy for IT assets

Let me cheat a bit, what do you guys name your stuff

I want to implement something proper I have windows and linux clients and many, and I only need 3 digits on numbers, currently we have 100 machines so it is unlikely that we will need to have more than 999 machines ever.

Using Snipe-IT, we use a two-letter prefix followed by a five-digit number.

We have a 2-3 letter prefix (company initials) and then 5 digit number also.

3 character prefix then 6 digits but we are adding mobile/printers/pc/

Only really did 6 as it filled the labels we had printed better

My physical assets use a 2 digit prefix and then a 5 digit number.

This doesn't mean the computers are named that though..... Cause others think using an asset tag is difficult to know what the system is for.

I use lower case.

I use a 4 character code telling me whether it is a desktop, laptop, for faculty or staff. Then a short building abbreviation to let me know where it is. Finally a unique 4 digit property code.

Ah, I was curious how you would have a simple way to auto increment your asset tags, Snipe-IT has a way, but the prefix is static to whatever you provide.

Of course it could be changed manually, but who would want to do that.
