Solved Best naming strategy for IT assets
-
My physical assets use a 2 digit prefix and then a 5 digit number.
This doesn't mean the computers are named that though..... Cause others think using an asset tag is difficult to know what the system is for.

Thanks very helpfull, the two letter prefix are capital or small ?
Uppercase.
-
I use lower case.
ab-00000
-
I use a 4 character code telling me whether it is a desktop, laptop, for faculty or staff. Then a short building abbreviation to let me know where it is. Finally a unique 4 digit property code.

Ah, I was curious how you would have a simple way to auto increment your asset tags, Snipe-IT has a way, but the prefix is static to whatever you provide.
Of course it could be changed manually, but who would want to do that.

@dustinb3403 I will install it to see what your talking about and try to get back with you.

I like how simple and straightforward the app is.
Before that I was using GLPI which I still like too. -

We use GUID for that.

We use the Chassis ID or Serial Number. Depending on vendor/brand.
