Wifi extenders
-
Hello all, my girlfriend is constantly telling me how slow her wifi is. I've looked at a few wifi extenders, any suggestions? Preferably in-expensive..
-
@wrcombs Are you sure its because of the weak signal? It might be because of interference as well. There might be lots of wifi APs nearby (neighbors, etc. Really depends on the location). A simple wifi analyzer app on your phone will give you more info. Maybe all you need is to change the channel.
-
Have you confirmed that the wifi is the issue by doing a speed test on a wired connection? Tested other wifi devices or different adapters on her device? How far is she from her AP?
If the issue is actually the wifi, multiple Ubiquiti APs are probably your best bet.
-
If it's really because of the signal strength - get a Ubiquiti and forget about it.
-
@rojoloco We've done wireless speed test, her AP is 3 rooms away, we tested both in her room and right by the AP and it was a huge change.
-
I should add, we are at an apartment, cant really drill holes for ethernet cords for APs
-
@wrcombs sounds like interference or plaster/wire mesh walls. Get 2x Ubiquiti APs, run some CAT6, get the wireless signal more evenly and effectively spread around the home.
Using "extenders" or "repeaters" will drastically reduce the available speed, new access point(s) will be the best solution.

Adding Wifi extenders will make the wifi even slower.
What is the current make and model of the AP?

@harry-lui Her router is a ARRIS SURFboard SBG6580-RB DOCSIS 3.0 , looking for cheap options..

That's not the router, at least I hope that's not the router. That's the cable modem
-
@dashrender yes, just a modem. But so much better than the comcrap one.
-
I gave William an ER-X and an unifi AP a while ago. Not sure if this is what he is using or not?
-
Lots of devices on wifi slow it down, too.
-
Also you could try changing the channel. On android they make wireless apps where you can analyze the wireless channels and then pick one that is by itself. That has some good results for people and its free/quick. Might be worth a shot. Something like this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.farproc.wifi.analyzer&hl=en
-
@dashrender not using it. This is at her aprtment.
-
I know this was already said, but the Ubiquiti AP by itself might fix it. It has made a considerable difference in various places I have installed it.
-
@rojoloco Agreed!
-
@aaronstuder Yeah, this will work if you cannot run cables through the walls.
