For MSPs, for example, things like XO are godsends. Centralized management for multiple installations, no need for Windows licensing just for a GUI interface, etc.
Oh I'd happily be a XO user if Xen itself was not the ugly step sister of the VM world. Some of the stuff it is doing is just too special to really throw it into the mix of offerings, so its hyper-v or (heaven help us) VMWare.
What about KVM?
KVM doesn't have anything like XO afaik
That's a single pane of glass for everything?
Yup, but not on Hyper-V
-
Yet... I've heard talk of it being ported.

I stand corrected. Thanks

Looks like they are working on fixing their SSL issues. But damn! Didn't 5Nine used to cost around $400 for single host? Now the least expensive option is their 1-yr license on 5Nine Datacenter for $749.

Yeah, it's crazy.
-
Also looks like they've obliterated any links to previously downloaded products. The My Downloads section used to have a list of what I'd downloaded but it's empty now.

Someone is going to step into that space very quickly, I guarantee it. As Hyper-V grows, that market is ripe for the picking.

Are you saying that it's inevitable that someone will make a free product to replace this? If yes, why is it inevitable?

Yes, one because it's an insanely obvious market gap that has been filled for all the other products and only avoided on this one because it was not needed because of 5Nine and because I know of more than one company kicking around the idea because it's such a huge market gap and if I know a few talking about it, tons more are actually talking about it.

Explains the cold call and emails I got today

Right - but where's the pay off?
XOA appears to be having a huge time making profits. Of course, I'm guessing Hyper-V probably has a much larger market share, but I also ask - why did 5Nines kill their free product? was it because they weren't making any money on it at all? That the conversation rate to paying customer was so low as to make it non viable?

Right - but where's the pay off?
Why do you always need a payoff? Where is the payoff for Linux? Yet it's massive. Where is the payoff for FreeBSD or Libreoffice?

Wasn't open source. Only existed as a loss leader, not as a value add to humanity. No gift economy effect.

That the conversation rate to paying customer was so low as to make it non viable?
Likely, and the need for that conversion is the issue. You need a product that doesn't care about that.

Sure, it's priced out of the market. So that's as expected.

Yeah I need all software I install on my systems to act as silent bitcoin miners that send the coin to the developers wallet . . .

That's not a bad idea, ha ha.

damn it - I did mean to mention that so it would be a non starter.
XOA was clearly having issues - it was not a gift eco setup though.

It is, XO is gift economy. XOA is just monetizing on people who want support. Nothing non-gift about that. Requires time and resources per person, so there is a charge.

The FogProject has this built into their system, you have to enable it though if you want to contribute to them.
But it is there.
