Share Your Backup Failure Stories to Celebrate Backup Day

Everyone in IT seems to have horror stories of failed backups, no backups, backups that were so old as to be useless. Let's celebrate Backup Day with some stories of your own disasters!

When I first started working here. All the computers were backing up to one of the workstations. That workstation was backing up to itself! 1 lightning strike and it would've all been gone! Not even a central console, had to go check every single workstation to make sure they were actually being backed up, and as for testing backups? "lolwhat"
I got a couple NAS units in after building a box to put them in, in an outbuilding. Also got a support contract with Amanda (the paid support version of Amanda). That made life easier, but three years latter I had test restores start failing and support was telling me "That error shouldn't cause an issue." So Amanada got the "don't let the door hit you on the way out" treatment.
Today we're using Crashplan and backing up to an actual server box, because the server box was less money than buying a new NAS when they failed. I don't really like CrashPlan at the moment, and would like to find something else to use. At least my test restores haven't failed yet, which is more than I can say for other backup products.

Backup Exec + LTO tapes. That's what we had here when I started 3 years ago. Not much better now, but at least backups are going to a DAS that gets replicated to 2 others.

Sadly we have that in one area as well. I don't understand why.
