@JaredBusch does MS Office not support WebDAV? If it does, this API exists already 😉

I assume that Office is using WebDAV for this. So write something that can make NextCloud show up in the dialog like this.

      0_1487776868805_upload-9f3fefe5-3a3f-46dc-9d34-ed9cbd9741a9

I honestly don't know what it takes to show up there - perhaps you can already do it, maybe it needs some work. Would be cool to see, agreed.

Microsoft has some information here (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35474) about how to get that to happen. (Granted, it is for Office 2013)

      That requires a local sync.

Potentially. If they do what MS does and point straight to the Web URL... maybe not... Just food for thought.

As you can see in the screenshot, when I clicked on the "One Drive - Personal" on the top right it opened a standard windows File dialog box but the address bar shows
          0_1487777917417_upload-a067559c-1ca8-425e-959b-f2f3b887d2b3

Clicking on it reveals the full URL in standard form: https://d.docs.live.net/c44d01487196d328

so can't you just enter webdav://mycloud.com/webdav/files/shareddocs/awesome/ there? (just making up a webdav URL here)...

That is what I do in my linux applications 😉

An alternative is to mount the webdav as a drive and just open files in the file open dialog, click on the virtual drive and open & save from there.

I am sorry, I have no windows experience 😉

Can I? Of course I can. But I also can think for myself and any number of other things that users cannot do.

Users cannot be trained to do that.

We're trying to avoid actually mounting anything... As @JaredBusch said, the users likely will break it first.

@FATeknollogee On Nextcloud.com you can download fully configured VMs. Should be easy to run. 🙂

We have some pretty easy install instructions around ML, too. And I'm working on same DevOps installation methods right now. Hoping to have a Salt installer for the single node installation soon. Perfect for installing on Scale or Vultr, for example.

Normal users can't be asked to type something in. Heck it's hard enough sometimes getting them to browse through and find the s: drive.

To make this really user-centric, it needs to have a button inside the save dialog that allows them to browse to where they want to open/save a file, like JB's example.

My whole thinking is a way to move from the current workflows of today and network shares to a future workflow of accessing things directly through the apps.

This is how most mobile apps work.

If WebDAV works, just in theory, what would be nice is an integration so that we can push it out to MS Office somehow.

                      Or likewise, to LibreOffice 😉

I'm not a Windows expert. But isn't there a way to create a network share entry in the save dialog for all users. A WebDAV entry is similar to a normal network share entry.

Yes. We hope that more and more hardware manufacturers ship boxes with Nextcloud installed. We ourselves are not in the hardware business. But if someone knows someone who could/should ship Nextcloud preinstalled then we should talk and recommend this. 🙂

Probably 🙂 I know that it has WebDAV in a dropdown. I bet there is a text file that holds those details or something.

On the software side, a couple of projects offer something like that. @alefattorini talked about one - Nethserver. And there is Univention's UCS which is a bit like that for SMB. And the Snaps from the Nextcloud Box can be put on any device/os that supports it (most linux'es).

With hardware - yeah, it would be nice to have a NAS with Nextcloud sold out of the box... We are talking to the guys doing the Omnia router, perhaps that'll come with Nextcloud some day 😉

And maybe somebody wants to start a business? We would be happy to help and if you need hard drives, let me know, I know some ppl at a big storage vendor 😛

There should be a SAM-SD with NextCloud integrated out of the box. I wonder who we'd talk to about that.
