@MattSpeller I got a similar quote for same config minus the SSDs and only half the RAM at $2,500 CDN

border agent: That's a nice server you got there.... be a shame if you had to... pay taxes on it! muahahahaha
Nothing to claim, a buddy gave me this equipment from his personal lab.
"In general, the goods you include in your personal exemption must be for your personal or household use. These goods include souvenirs, gifts that you received from friends or relatives living outside Canada or prizes that you won."
Canada customs gives no f(***)s about gifts, only charging taxes on everything
https://travel.gc.ca/returning/customs/what-you-can-bring-home-to-canada#conditions
Even in the US you pay gift taxes, they are actually higher near 50% tax rate, unless it is a gift to a spouse or political party.

Really? I thought the gift tax didn't kick in until something like the $12,000 mark, then it's 50%, I was unaware that the high starting number only applied to family?
It's sad, you gift a family member $15K, and they get way less than the $12K damn guberment

Huh - I wonder if these fell off the back of a truck? If it's true and Samsung says the warrant is valid that's an awesome price, assuming that work in your new Dell.
I know @BRRABill had an issue with non Dell SSDs - I think it was dropping the drives or at least the partitions, in either case, the data was gone.
Please keep us informed!

Yeah the gift tax doesn't start until a value close to 6 Million US. as of 2015.
So you'd be more than in the clear.

That's Federal.. Almost every state has gift tax as well. Also that is the lifetime limit meaning that if you give over 5million you always are taxed, you are still taxed federallly under 5 million if you go over the annual limit which is much much lower.
-
@Jason This would be at the federal level as two people from different nations are involved.
The state can pound sand.

Not sure where you get that. You live in the state laws still apply. Just like when you buy stuff online you have to pay the taxes not collected by the merchant to your state at the end of the year.

But @Danp I thought the dell systems had a hard time with the Samsung ssds..
Taxes are insane doing that. Easily 100% of the cost of the server. Plus the shipping isn't cheap, either. And you have to pay a customs proxy agent to do the work for you.

Doesn't work that way. Taxes are on the VALUE of the gear in CANADA. Has zero to do with the usage, price, intent, etc. You are not talking about a state tax agent here, you are talking about customs.

We have to pay taxes on servers that are just resting in Canada. Even if they are US origin and return to the US, you have to pay taxes to go into Canada. No exceptions.

You seem to be under the impression that customs agents are dumb. You would be incorrect in my experience.
Tax rate here is 13.5% so potentially saving $500 in tax is not worth the risk. They can seriously mess with you.
2630x1.25x1.135= $3731CDN.... sigh.
Edit: checked xe.com, it's $1.30:1 sobs quietly for the death of his online shopping fun times
YOu are assuming that the low price would be used. Those could easily be taxed based on a higher $5K or so US price.
