Looking at installing FreePBX in Vultr for some testing. I had a local install in my lab but never connected any trunks to it. May even use the server after it is all set up for "production" for my family.
Why? Does everyone not already have a cell phone?
For personal service, I never recommend VoIP.
I haven't thought about it much yet because my kids are 5 and 2, but eventually I feel like I'm going to have to get a home phone? Maybe? Not sure what people are doing these days. If I can get away with having just a home phone for the kids for a few years, I'll take it.

The problem is the cost of the phones. would love a no frill VOIP phone for say $30 - OK entry level Yealink SIP-T19p E2 https://www.amazon.com/Yealink-YEA-SIP-T19P-E2-Entry-level-phone-Lines/dp/B013GUGP7M $40.
Now to find a portable where the base and 1 handset is $99 or less.
We have loads of customers with the sluck T19. Looks great.

By five my kids have cell phones. Works for far more than them just being home. Its just so broadly useful for safety.
The company provides home service for employees. So we have that too.

@JaredBusch Yes, everyone has a cell. My thoughts were if I am going to set it up, it may as well get used. My parents still have a house phone as cell service isn't great.
One reason for me was to have an IP phone in my shop as well as the house. I have this now as an "intercom" of sorts. I can get called from the house and get my cheap Grandstream phone dirty and not care.
Definitely not a "must have". Figured if I set up a new lab instance in Vultr, I may as well actually use it.

lol I just can't see giving my son a cell phone right now. It doesn't even feel like an option. Maybe one of the GPS/Phone watches? Definitely not a phone. Even if it only had one button to call us...

My mom actually asked me about their phone service. They like having the landline but the cost is ridiculous. I believe it was $74/mo last time I looked. I could port their number to a voip provider for a lot less.

WOW - with it being that high - what do they have for internet options?

Putting lipstick on the pig in order to sell it?

@Dashrender They have 3/1 from a wireless provider. It is not the greatest but there aren't any options other than satellite and that is worse IMO.

Need to get you one of those cell phones for old people with some extra oomph in the speaker department.... that, or a set of hearing aids. Amplify All the sounds!

and then you can turn the hearing aid completely off when you're tired of people.

I was afraid of that, with a phone bill that high, I expected little else. You're just kinda SOL.

It's not the volume, it's an inability to remove background noise and the audio quality of cell phones is enough to make it hard for me to make out words.

Microsoft edge is rude, to open up like that right off the bat when you log into a PC for the first time after an update .

In every conceivable way. It's awful.
