New thermostat is in and we have a working furnace! From what we can tell, the renters broke the furnace two or three years ago and didn't know or something. It definitely just kicked on correctly for the first time in a very long time. We have heat again.

Heading out to Texas via Canada to go to Michigan to see @mike-Ralston and @fiyafly only because of a freak of nature that going South would mean a snowier drive then going North to go South.

I tore mine of those when I was younger, had it in a splint for about 2 months...the pain was mental - I feel for you!
