What Are You Doing Right Now

LOL, yeah, the scale that people think is big is nuts. I'm used to databases with pure SSDs, and 2TB of RAM and trillions of daily writes alone and that's virtual! And that was years ago. Nearly every post in SW is like "What year is it?" People are actually asking these questions today as if it was 2005 when the question was legit.
Amen. It's been hard for me to get my manager out of this mindset as well, since he did server admin before me, almost all of which was physical (he dabbled with some Hyper-V and VMware Player instances).
Last week I retired 5 old physical servers after some P2V. Just for fun I tried to install a logging server on one of the stronger/newer physical boxes, just to play with. Between boot media issues, controller drivers and various other physical-specific frustrations, I spent hours trying to get the darn thing even working. Experiment over. Opened vSphere, deployed Ubuntu, done in 5 min. I'll never go back!!!

Sad news back home...

I didn't even realize those streets were big enough for tractor trailers.
As a former truck driver I could tell you some stories. Don't ever mention Heinz around me!
Did you have to go to the main Heinz plant in Pittsburgh?
Nope, it was one in south eastern New Jersey. To reach the receiving truck dock you had to drive down railroad tracks in the plant complex, and to reach the railroad tracks you drove through what looked like a junk yard for old freight buggies!

Ah ok. The one in Pittsburgh is off of 28 and I can't believe a truck could get in.

Today would have been Ravi Shankar's 96th birthday.... I think I'll be listening to some Indian classical music today.

Well, a conventional truck and 53' trailer couldn't get into those receiving docs. Only 4 docs, and they had trailers sitting in 3 of them. Of course they didn't leave the dock on the end clear, so the only trucks that could actually hit the open doc were day cabs and/or 48' trailers, no my conventional sleeper with 53' trailer! Oh yeah, the other side of the docs that blocked access was a retaining wall for the diesel tank used for the yard train engine they had bopping around the plant. Not one of the better days.

Will go home to countryside -
I'm good, that's nice any plans for the vacation? Or just visiting family?

April 21-25th is my vacation. It feels like I need it more than I need air or food.

4 more hours of work this week, then heading out of town for a 3 day weekend!

The first half of that sentence made me think you were going to PAX East but the second half clarified things for me

SSD's are a 1:4 ratio for the same amount of Storage. I want to justify them so badly but I can't. Why pay the same amount for 25% of the space? fml.

Nope haha, I'll be spending nearly 3 weeks camping, hiking, fly fishing, reading, resting, drinking single malt scotch and generally being a bum around some of the best and most remote lakes in British Columbia!

Sounds fantastic. I'm going to attempt to win the SFV tournament at PAX. We'll see if I can pull it off.
