I like the way MBS (as how Microsoft defines as "Modern Backup Solutions") work. Most do CBT very well, like Veeam, SC-DPM, and other modern solutions.

I literally refer to these as legacy backups, lol.

Does UrBackup have a process for writing to tape as well?

No, it is wholly disk based and additionally leverages advanced file system features (such as snapshots, reflinks, compression) when available.

So if we wanted to have cloud storage, we'd run a UrBackup server hosted then, rather than a local one and pointing to something like S3?

I don't think urbackup supports hyperv vss for backing up VMs without downtime. You will need to back up VMs from inside them, as if they are a physical server.

So if you want to back up VMs at the host level, which is a major benefit of virtualization, then you are stuck using a non open source backup solution. If you want free, then you will just have to use the built in Windows Server Backup or hope you are within the limits of the free stuff like Unitrends.

If you have the time to figure out how to get AMANDA to use hyperv vss for example, do share!

      Right, it's simple agent only.

Tried it today in Windows enviroment for both server and client, and while it is easy to setup it took forever for 1 image BU to complete. not sure why was not limited in CPU or RAM, and after 45 mins I stopped it and didnt care about it anymore, the client was fresh windows with 14 GB on C :
