I have not seen any fast food places in the states using automated ordering machines yet.
I take it you haven't been to a Chili's or Applebee's lately? Both of them have the machines, some have more options enabled than others.
Don't really consider those to be fast food. Takes a while to eat there.
Doh.. missed the fast food part of your post.... Yeah I haven't seen any fast food self ordering either (unless you count ordering from Taco Bell using their new phone App.

This was in my paper yesterday: Waitress service comes to McDonald's http://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/aug/05/mcdonalds-table-service-trial-uk-fast-food
I like McDonald's and eat there a lot. Mainly because my kids like it, the food is consistently ok, the price dirt cheap and I've always found the service to be pretty good. From the article, it sounds like they're better in Europe than the US though (or more likely, the competition is much better in the US).

in the US, McD's is anything but cheap. More expensive than a lot of fancier restaurant options.

Not really. It's cheap and you get what you pay for too. It's crap.

It is the same price as all there competition... things like Burger King and Wendy's. The food is also pretty awful on a consistent basis...
-
McD's is horrible especially when all of their competitors have done a lot to up their game and quality over the last few years.

as is Burger King. Wendy's is hit and miss.

Really there are very few good options in the North East. Once you get out of the North East your fast food options get much better, cheaper and consistent.
-
@Minion-Queen I ate at McDonalds a couple months ago because there wasn't much else around. I paid for it the rest of the day. I used to love Burger King, but I can't eat there any more either. They just wreck my stomach. Somehow I can still eat Wendy's and be ok. The thing I love about this area (Western PA) is the diner selection we have. When we were living in FL, they just didn't have them.
-
For fast food we do either Wegmans or a Diner. Usually takes less time and is cheaper.
-
@Minion-Queen We don't have Wegmans but we do have Giant Eagle. They have a decent ready made foods section.
-
Diner's here = Denny's (has been closed down multiple times for a cover for proposition) Waffle House = The dirtiest, sketchiest restaurant you've seen, and then Huddle House which is slightly less sketchy than Waffle House.

And their prices to match. Though BK/McD's/TacoBell all exist in about the same price range. But you toss places like Chipolte and Qudoba seem to be 2-3 dollars more on average.

Yeah WaffleHouse is dirty.. but damn.. for whatever reason I can't get enough of their food...
-
@thecreativeone91 We don't have any Waffle Houses around here. It's all locally owned small diners.

Chipoltle is like $9 vs $6 for McDs for a meal here. But it's a million times better (and better for you).
-
@thecreativeone91 but you can't beat the amount of protein you get out of a sandwich from McDonalds
-
I think you mean "protein" and they use the "special sauce" to get the protein into you, right?
-
@dafyre that took me a second. I thought I spelled it incorrectly haha.
