Not at this time, however if there are enough requests....
-
So it will NOT work on physical servers?

It will backup physical servers but the UEB itself will not install on physical servers.
I have never used it before, so I am not understanding what you mean.

Read the release article. The Unitrends Free is specifically for virtual. Zero mention of protecting physical servers. It's a free product with limitations. When you buy an appliance, physical or virtual, you can back up all of the above. When you go free, you can do what they're giving you for free.

Thanks for the feedback on what you'd like to see our UnitrendsFree protect. As has been mentioned, it will currently only protect VMware or Hyper-V clients. Part of this is because our current deployment options for all Unitrends software are either VMware or Hyper-V, and because the demand for a fully functioning free product with all features like advanced backup scheduling, replication to the cloud, & more has far outweighed the requests for a free solution for other OSs,. We are always evaluating the requests from existing and prospective users, and if the demand for a specific OS rises, we will update the offering. Please let me know what questions you may have.

In the past, they have always given the product away as a template for Hyper-V or VMware. So you can setup the actual Unitrends install on either Hyper-V or VMware, and you can backup physical machines using it, but you cannot install the Unitrends Free directly onto physical hardware. Does that clear things up?

That doesn't match with the reasoning that @KatieUnitrends gave. She tied what it is running on to what it can backup.

You can't backup physical machines either. (unless it's a windows machine and you pretend it's a hpyer-v server to back it up), it installs you install an agent on the hyper-v host but there is no normal physical agent.

So they are changing it? Currently with the UEB you can backup physical machines by installing the agent to the machine or even to a VM, to treat it as a physical machine. So that won't be an option anymore? That seems odd.

It's agentless.

To some degree. Hyper-V still needs an agent to work.

Ran across the following the other day on this page:
Free Upgrade
Limited Time Offer: As part of our continued commitment to making backup easier, we are unifying our software products. As a first step in this process, now Unitrends Virtual Backup users can get a free upgrade to Unitrends Enterprise Backup. Future versions of Unitrends data protection software will combine the enterprise-class engine in Unitrends Enterprise Backup and an enhanced version of the user interface of Unitrends Virtual Backup v8.I assume this will eventually be available in the "free" version. Anyone know for sure? @KatieUnitrends

Unitrends Virtual Backup(UVB), Unitrends Enterprise Backup (UEB) and UnitrendsFree are three different products. The offer you mention above is for paid users of UVB only. Also, as has been stated a few times in this thread, UnitrendsFree is only licensed to protect VMware & Hyper-V clients. Please let me know what questions you may have.
