Not much luck with Linux Distro's

Manjaro has some built-in options for open vs proprietary drivers. It's what's running on the desktop that my kid uses for browsing / homework etc and it's just an older optiplex refurb with a basic NVIDIA card. You can even have the live version boot either with open or proprietary drivers from the GRUB menu.

I saw a news blurb a couple weeks ago about some distro, built on Fedora, designed to run all the Nvidia stuff for gaming.

You may want to go with other Linux distros (i.e. Ubuntu or Alma Linux)

@scottalanmiller I should have said Proton-GE. Thomas Crider/GloriousEggroll is behind that fork and has done some good stuff.

+1 vote for Nobara if you're running an nVIDIA card.
Ideally, having an AMD card instead would resolve a LOT of hassle for you, and make the experience of trying out lots of other distros much more fruitful. But yeah while you're on nVIDIA, go with Nobara.
I personally have a ROG laptop with a RTX 2070 (it was a salvage, I didn't pay for that kit lol) and I'm running EndeavourOS on it. It's tempermental still because I don't have the Power Management "things" installed/configured so that the machine can default to booting with the nVIDIA GPU and basically ignore the integrated Intel stuffz. As of now, I have to boot up, run "optimus-manager --switch nvidia", reboot, THEN I'm on the nVIDIA GPU and can game and whatnot. (Baldur's Gate runs great on that setup, btw). If there comes a point I get sick of fighting with it on EndeavourOS, I'll switch it to Nobara. EOS has a great community, though, and I've never had such a wonderful out-of-the-box experience with any other distro to date. I'm a recent deserter of the M$ plantation after spending my entire personal and professional life in that world, so having that "GUIn00b" M$ propensity and predisposition, which is DEFINITELY far removed from the philosophy of "Linux Land", I DID NOT have high expectations. I've found this journey invigorating with successful experiences like I've had with EOS, though.

Ubuntu is what he started with.
Alma isn't for desktop use (or IMHO production use of any kind. It's an LTS only kludge for bad software shops.)

@GUIn00b I was limited on what I could get into the country I am in without paying heavy import taxes. It had to be super small and support 4 monitors. But if I could I would for sure use AMD.

@CCWTech Super bizarre. So far Nobara iis VERY unstable... Uninstalled NVIDIA drivers and re-installed. It's the worst I have had so far... Installed all updates.
Super odd, I can run WIndows for weeks without problems, but really don't like the Windows environment...

@GUIn00b It't now up for 4.5 hours without issues.
One of the odd things is that it seems like every update recommends a reboot. I don't know if that is just the type of updates that have been pushed or if it's normal. Still evaluating. Thanks for the links, I'll check them out. I'm also looking at the Reddit group for Nobara. -
@CCWTech Still lockups... when Nobara crashes (Like Ubuntu and Kubuntu) I have to force off the PC with the power button. At least Fedora was generating errors and reporting them (and only taking me back to the login screen). So back to Fedora it is for me.

@CCWTech did it run fine with Win11? Why go to an OS that is causing constant issues as you mentioned in the OP?

Yes, no problems with Win 11.
Why run Linux? Well, Windows has sufficient issues as well... Long reboots for updates, slower performance, spyware/adware included in the OS, etc...
Admittedly there is some novelty for me to run Linux. I like running it because other than the lockup issue, in other ways it's pretty awesome compared to Windows.

Yeah I've been on Mac the last few months. Still trying to learn to like it, there's a lot of minor annoyances or quirks and quality of life differences that make it harder to get used to. I still prefer Ubuntu over MacOS for work, and Win11 strictly for personal use.

Not sure what changed, and maybe I am speaking too soon, but after trying Nobara I reinstalled Fedora, and no crashes in 2 days...
