Laura has been scheduling a lot of low cost homes with good layouts hoping to make home improvements with the savings. I'm just sitting here waiting for her to realize the headache isn't worth it. Based on my experience so far though I could see a nice house with ugly brick and I'd consider going the staining route

covering them up with another layer of brick.

What? why would you add another layer of brick?

Vinyl siding or maybe some sort of a veneer.

Ahhh... my mind went blank and I couldn't find the right word, like you said, veneer is the word I was looking for. I have thought about a brick veneer. They have some that are only like about 1" thick. My buddy who is a brick layer stated it has been done but he didn't like it much either.

Problem is, the first 4' of my house is brick which rests on the foundation. I am down to either painting it or veneer.

            Did find this though. https://www.dyebrick.com

Staining seems like a good option but I just have no one I know who has actually done it. I don't know what to expect or common pitfalls etc

Me neither. I am checking out their site to see how much their samples are. If I can get around to it in the next few weeks then I will post up some pics.

Looking at this I think I'd just do it myself tbh. Seems very simple, just tedious.

While I agree he is using a stain, he's painting the stain on.

Also F doing that by hand, I'd rather buy a house that matched what I wanted than waste a weekend doing that and getting the stink eye from the wife on the one spot I fell off the ladder and messed up the no so perfect line.

Yeah It's just absorbed into the brick from my understanding. Seems everyone does it this way from what I can see

How else could it be done? Dunking the whole wall in a bucket the size of the grand canyon?

Laura and I have seen probably 50-ish homes so far trying to find the right one for us and a lot of them have really ugly brick. I did some research and found that one way to resolve this is to stain the brick. You apparently can stain brick to an almost white. This would make some of the houses we've seen somewhat more viable, but none of my friends who are homeowners have attempted this.

Neighbors across the street painted their brick. Twice, because the wife decided it was too light of a grey after a year.

Laura: I think it's too light of a grey
Me: You should stain it the color you want then

While I agree he is using a stain, he's painting the stain on.

Also F doing that by hand, I'd rather buy a house that matched what I wanted than waste a weekend doing that and getting the stink eye from the wife on the one spot I fell off the ladder and messed up the no so perfect line.

Yeah It's just absorbed into the brick from my understanding. Seems everyone does it this way from what I can see

How else could it be done? Dunking the whole wall in a bucket the size of the grand canyon?

                                        Finger painting

                                        Finger PAINTING. You see?

                                        Bwahahaha

You could also drink it and spit it at the brick like something out of temple of doom. Never not an option

We've discussed painting/staining our exterior brick. It's just sort of bland and I think lightening it with a white or something would give it more curb appeal. Painting/staining brick is commonly done on these HGTV remodel shows.
