Linux Options for Dell PowerEdge 2950 II

Got an old PE2950. Wanted to get Fedora 30 on there, but it didn't load. Anyone know a current Linux that is known to work on there?

Not yet, was hoping to avoid it. We've only tried Fedora 30 so far because the KVM (physical KVM, not virtualization) died and we can't mount an ISO anymore.

A while back I had an old HP server, G5 I think, where Fedora and CentOS wouldn't install. Debian 9 did fine though so I would try Debian. I always do the install in text-mode (not graphical) BTW.
Download the netinstall image and select below options for a minimal install with SSH.

BTW, here is a guide how to install it if you need to guide a remote hand to do it.
https://www.howtoforge.com/tutorial/debian-minimal-server/It installs much faster than fedora & centos, maybe because it has less packages in the base install.

Debian 9 and 18.04 have been working. i have a couple of them and others with xcpng too

was just looking at what my coworker installed on our "spare" 2950 here; Debian 9 no issues. He hasn't tried Fedora/Centos or SUSE yet.

How did it (the fedora installation) fail? Sounds weird to me, those machines are ~2007-ish, but they have decent SAS interfaces and okay-ish xeons (for their time).

Support is generally considered an important thing for production. Primary vendor support, even if you don't pay for it and only maintain it as an option, is considered a hallmark of consideration for being in production. Think about Windows 7 and how people talk about it "going out of support" next year and what a big deal that is. But Debian has no support at all, so is in many ways similar to running Windows 7 many years down the road (without the part about being out of date.)
You can't use the "it's out of support" logic and "Debian is production ready" because it's conflicting. Ubuntu is basically Debian with enterprise backing.

We have a few here, when they finally go away, I'm calling in scientists to carbon date the internal components and look for microscopic fossils inside.
