Just having a conversation regarding assets, purchase dates etc with my coworker and he's of the stance that "if the information isn't at all available and can't be produced, then the system is inaccurate."

His stance is "well I have this on my excel document"
My Stance is "input the information into the system so it's not on your excel doc"

I'm of the stance that "the system can only tell you what you tell it, so if you put good information in then you can get accurate results".

      Change my mind.

@DustinB3403 He needs to use your system or not complain. That's what you have it for.

To provide a bit more context so a conversation can occur.

Snipe-IT will use the asset creation date in conjunction with the Life of the asset to determine the End of Life.

This is as accurate a way the system can use if you don't provide a Purchase Date.

I can only supply and input a Purchase Date for things that I know. IE I can't go back 6 years and input a purchase date, because purchases often weren't tracked in any meaningful way. IE : We purchase this laptop for Bob but then it went to who knows who because Bob quit.

And the invoice has "For Bob".

So the conversation goes, if you can tell me when Bob's laptop was bought I can provide you an accurate EoL for everything. P.S. use the damn system!

Why use a DB when you can have lots of Excel fun going cross-eyed?

And limited eyes so people can cross check for any inconsistency.

Let's see option 1) you control everything and there is no accountability or option 2) multiple people have insight into everything and the system can be verified by not just "well I said so"

Aside from fixing stupid, which you cannot do, I often will get the date fomr the Warranty. Dell and HP have this available.

It might not be the exact day purchased, but it will be close.

Purchase date works but if you want specific information Dell has an API designed to look up Warranties.

Those warranties are only valid if you purchase direct - otherwise they can be months off. You buy a PC from a vendor, where that unit has been sitting on the shelf for 3 months - that's three more months of warranty you typically get.

Though in lacking the purchasing invoice, the manufacture date is better than nothing.
