Creating a VoIP.ms SIP trunk
-
Log in to your VoIP.ms control panel and navigate to DID Numbers -> Order DID(s)
Select the type of number wanted, local or toll free, and country it should be from. For this example we will go with a local number in the United States.
Select a state, from the left box or try your luck searching for a specific number in the right box. I will choose Illinois.
Now select a rate center. This is a legacy tie in to how phone numbers were originally assigned and the PSTN still has to maintain this. Select something in the town you want if you are worried about local people calling in without long distance charges.
Once you select a rate center, you will be presented with a list of phone numbers.
If the number has a little cell phone image after it, that number is capable of SMS is desired. You will need to select the number(s) you want, select the per minute plan, say no to the caller ID lookup, and then select a POP server near to your PBX. I have a Vultr instance in Chicago running FreePBX, so I will select the Chicago POP.
Scroll down to the Routing and select where this DID will be delivered. I like to have a sub account setup instead of using the main account just to add a little more obscurity to my SIP authentication. You can also setup fail over options here, but you have to previously configure things and that is beyond the scope of this initial setup.
Click Order DID and you are done. You will have a working phone number in about 60 seconds.

Can someone explain the $$ "details" of the Unlimited Plan?
It says $4.25 per mo. per DID, 2 channels, 6 sec increments -

It says $4.25 per mo. per DID, 2 channels, 6 sec incrementsIt's $4.25 for unlimited INBOUND calls but you still have to pay for all outbound calls @ 0.01 / minute.
You're also limited to 2 channels which, AFAIK, means you can only have 2 active calls at any time on this trunk. -

You're also limited to 2 channels which, AFAIK, means you can only have 2 active calls at any time on this trunk. It is not unlimited inbound. It is up to 3500 minutes inbound. It is right there in the screenshot. It is not a hard limit, and if you go over once in a while, they will watch you and force you to change if they deem it necessary.
They sell it because people want flat rate.
It is $4.25 per month. Assuming the DID is $1 of that, it is $3.25 for 3500 minutes of inbound calling with. Max of 2 simultaneous calls.
That is a good rate. It is $0.00092857 per minute.
But Residential will most likely never be inbound only, so it will never be only $4.25 per month.

@jaredbusch : Their website makes no mention of the 3500 minutes though, you're right, your screenshot above does.
Does anyone know if this limit still exists? Your post is almost 2 years old.

Still the same...

@scottalanmiller : Guess you have to choose the plan and select a number before being given "the fine print".
Sneaky bastardsNot that this was my question but want to ensure @FATeknollogee has all the details...

@jaredbusch Nope... I think you're confusing this as you have an account and are logged in. @FATeknollogee pasted a page for new subscribers.
If you follow that link, then select the unlimited plan, you arrive at a new page
The new page allows one to select Local or Toll Free.
Choose Local and your state and proceed to the next page.
Choose your rate center and your page expands to show :
City Per Minute Rate Unlimited Rate
Athens $0.85/month + $0.009/minute $4.25/month + $0.00/minute View Available Numbers +We're 4 pages in and it doesn't specify this inbound limit.
