Hyper-V Manager Sometimes Disconnects from Failed RPC Calls
-
I'll as,k @gjacobse to fill in what he knows from the history on this, but we have a central Hyper-V Manager on Windows Server 2012 R2 that sometimes disconnects and cannot manage Hyper-V hosts because of failed RPC calls.
This seems like something that should not happen with any regularity. Now to track down what is causing it. We've not noticed any network reliability issues between machines, but that's not impossible. All in the same rack. I'm told it happens from time to time with two different hosts. At the moment it is affecting only one and not the other.

Looks like troubleshooting on this was started some time ago:

Looks like there is about a 5 hour uptime... likely the Manager was running when it rebooted resulting the loss. Restarting the manager re-connected normally

wow - knowing more now,.. I wonder if it has to do with the reboot cycle.

Surprising that after so many hours it would not reconnect given that it was a fresh view attempt of that host.

Not particularly, if you have used this tool much.
The feeling I get from using it, is that the connection is never forgotten until you close and reopen.

Are this Windows AD domain joined Hyperv servers? I see that issue when the DCs are offline or rebooting.

I've experienced similar when hosts are not on a domain and the VMs are. All kinds of WMI errors requiring PowerShell to resolve; management and connectivity between joined and non-joined.

Do the hosts have their firewall enabled with logging enabled (should be)? If yes, check the log for dropped packets.
Are DNS 0/1 on the pNIC of the host set up correctly? Is there a missing DNS server there?
Is DNS sync'd correctly between DNS servers?
Anything in the source or destination Event Logs?

You can restart the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service or the Windows Remote Management service and it should work.
