Decent budget NAS

I have one. I haven't had any issues with it, and performance is pretty good. I can pull over 50 Mb/s on average.

 @irj yeah that should be fine but what happens if the house burns down. It's all about risk etc. But I would be happy with just raid1

 I concur with ReadyNAS or Synology recommendations. Buffalo Terastations have been hit and miss, not sure that I trust it any longer.

 If you want to lower risk, look at the Synology-based IOsafe devices. Able to live through a fire and flood. Still just a Synology, but like a Synology is a fire proof safe.

I would think the risk of a hard drive failing is much more likely than fire or flooding.

 so you can wind up with a situation where you're more worried about fire than disk failure.
