I would guess they are vastly different to ensure you're in the correct block. If blocks near each other have similar names, you could end up in the wrong block by accident.

I'm making the assumption there is some tie in with the words, rather than just random words jumbled together. Which could be completely wrong.
Correct, your assumption is wrong. Naming of blocks provides no indication to their location - did you watch the video? On stage, the two blocks had two totally different names.
As for an app - there is already a google maps like app. Though looking through it, it still needs a lot of work. https://map.what3words.com/
I did watch the video, and I made the assumption he wasn't using an actual 3 word address in his speech... but he could've been.

I don't see the 3-word system replacing current infrastructure -- especially in first world countries. But I definitely see it becoming a great addtion to it.

Depends on whether or not you have a GPS or not. Down here in the south, folks can give you pretty accurate directions -- at least the area I live in, lol.

Waht do you mean? Three word addresses are absolutely useless without a GPS. So if you lack a GPS, these stop working.

But what makes it know one and not the other? If teh issue is that you gave the GPS the wrong coordinates, it's going to go to the wrong place with either system.

Remember, under the hood, the three word system is just a code for GPS coordinates. No matter what, the GPS coordinates have to work. If they break, this system breaks. But with the three word system, you have a second level that could break that is unnecessary.

People don't learn GPS addresses. But people can learn 3 word codes. Why else do we have a DNS system for the internet?

Do we really expect people to regularly memorize three word addresses? I think we know that this cannot work.
mouse.table.pony will be rat.table.horse to 50% of people. People cannot accurately repeat exact words, it's not a thing that normal people can do accurately. If they could, how much of our jobs as IT people woudn't exist? Even in IT, people can't get xen, zen, xenserver, and zenserver separate, even though they are four discrete things. You think normal non-IT people will not have those problems and send people to the other side of the planet because they assumed "close enough?"

One of the first things you will notice when you tune the low end of any VHF band is that most QSOs include an exchange of "grid squares." What are grid squares? Well, they're more like rectangles and are just a way of dividing up the surface of the Earth. Grid squares are a shorthand means of describing your general location anywhere on the Earth in a manner that is easy to communicate over the air.
An instrument of the Maidenhead Locator System (named after the town outside London where it was first conceived by a meeting of European VHF managers in 1980), a grid square measures 1° latitude by 2° longitude and measures approximately 70 × 100 miles in the continental US. A grid square is indicated by two letters (the field) and two numbers (the square), as in FN31, the grid square within which W1AW, ARRL's Maxim Memorial Station, resides.
Each subsquare is designated by the addition of two letters after the grid square, as FN44ig. These more precise locators are used as part of the exchange in the 10-GHz contest. They measure 2.5 minutes latitude by 5 minutes longitude, roughly corresponding to 3 × 4 miles in the continental US.

This was my first question when I read the transcript. How does this help anyone just do addressing by GPS coordinates easier to use and already used by every GPS unit in existence.
