Planning to backup the entire virtual environment to Backblaze B2.
The only problem with using Nextcloud is that it doesn't have the scale that CrashPlan had. If my files get deleted for some reason, and my Nextcloud server gets hosed, all my files are gone forever. That was an infinitesimally small risk with CrashPlan.
Thus why it is all going to Backblaze B2. Recovery should be really quick since it's all hosted with fast connections.
I wonder how well Unison would work for large volumes. It sounds like it would synchronize the files across the hosts but there must be a point where fragmentation becomes an issue, especially if a high number of files change and must be synchronized. And this still doesn't seem to address the malware encryption risk as it would simply sync the encrypted files across the volumes.
I have no idea with Unison as I've never used it before.
The malware protection thing is what made me think of NextCloud first with it's auto saving of previous versions.

That's assuming you take no backups, which seems like a weird thing to do.
Agreed, that would be kinda stupid and pointless.
So if you take backups of your NC and the NC gets hosed, you just restore to a new one.

I think I'll try a combination of NextCloud (server) and Duplicati (local client via WebDAV) to start out with. I'll try to report back after getting everything setup.

So with using NC for backups via the desktop client, the last time I used their client was when MC had just turned v11 and it was buggy, at least for me. Would routinely disconnect, and I couldn't rely on it to sync. Has anyone used the latest version on Windows and if so, has it improved? I'm specifically thinking as a replacement for my parents PC since they live 2hrs away, last thing I want to do is having to get on ScreenConnect to help them out every other day or worse, driving over.

I don't remember having sync issues with it. That could be another reason to use Duplicati as the actual backup software, NextCloud is only a storage provider with it.

NC is for primary storage. You'd back up NC. NC itself isn't a backup.

I use the paid version of Crashplan at home. I script each laptop to backup data to a linux box which in turn connects to CrashPlan Pro. I only need to pay for a single seat. At around $10 for unlimited storage in this model, it works well enough

Just setup Duplicati on my laptop and got it connected to Backblaze B2. Very easily done, looks like it will be my new backup method for the friends and family that have earned service from me. Also, B2 is super cheap compared to standard tiers from the other big cloud providers. It's just a tinny bit more expensive than glacier, but without the wait for days if you need to restore.

Same here but the systems use Deja Dup to backup with.
I was using the paid home subscription. I may just change to the business one. I don't know how much effort I want to put into something else.

I'm backing up enough data (1.7TB) that B2 would cost more than crash plan business and then there is the added cost of downloads on top of that.

I don't think I'll have more than 8TB total between 5 computers. So it may end up being free, but I really don't mind keeping backups even longer if I can. It's not like storage space when talking GB is much money at all, unlike @stacksofplates and almost 2TB.
