One of my favorites is RunAs Radio.

To me Twit.tv is about the same as SW. Not really in-depth as far as technical, but more journalistic and IT Buyers club from what I can see.

@NerdyDad You nailed it. Good entertainment at best. I find it much easier to listen to for entertainment than I do non-tech based podcasts, but not what I'd consider a good source.

TWIT.tv -- in particular Security Now

That's one of the better shows. The problem with that particular one is that Steve Gibson tends to see the tree and not the forest. Don't take his advice on not using the latest version of Windows!

@travisdh1 Ha! I agree on the not using the latest OS issue. For most other things, he seems to have some wisdom.

It's not an IT or technical show, right? It's just entertainment for fringe-gadgety people? It's not like it's meant for people that would actually be making decisions.

Yes, that's how I've always seen it. Tech-sounding stuff for people not actually in tech loaded with misleading info, repetition of misunderstood things and no value. Actually dangerous, due to the reinforcement of misconceptions.
-
@scottalanmiller I haven't watched it in several months (tend to do in spurts. Off the top of my head, I can't recall a topic where I've said "Steve! You're a genius!." However, I haven't watched a podcast where afterward I said to myself "Steve, you're a fool!"

That's my fear. I avoid the show because it lacks content I'm interested in and everyone that likes it says things about it that makes me think that they securely hate it but watch it anyway. But I never hear of them every being good, only being bad or not being obvious. I worry that it is full of misinformation.
The problem with misinformation is that when it is obvious, you know it. When it is not obvious, you are tempted to think that they are correct.

The best way I've seen it is journalists trying to talk about IT. Just like SW is marketers trying to do IT.
-
The other shows are (as has been mentioned) more for news / entertainment value rather than technical learning. That being said, I have researched a few things in the past because of moments of "I heard about this on X show, let me learn more."
-
If I watch anything that is related to IT in podcast form, its going to be Hak5. They are more on the Ubuntu/Debian-side of Linux, but because they are coming from a security-focused background, and not generalized IT.

That's literally what it is. I've looked into it before. It's "IT News" for people outside of IT.

Sadly there used to be a non-profit tech channel, about 14 years ago, that was amazing: IT Conversations. Had interviews, conference talks and all kinds of things. It was amazing content. They ran it for years, had talks from tons of the best conferences (delayed of course) and all extremely IT and SE. No reporters, all actual IT people and IT vendors and researchers. I've never found something to replace it.
-
@scottalanmiller When I've watched TwiT podcasts, I don't take everything that's said as gospel (like with any news-like entity), but it often does pique my interest to learn more about [insert topic here.]
As for Steve Gibson, he's been called out before when he gets something wrong, and he'll own up to it--which is refreshing.
