Also, is it me or do vertical videos drive you nuts? Our oldest daughter does nothing but vertical videos of our grandson and I try to tell her to go horizontal so years later, they can be enjoyed on a television or wide screen device but she refuses to listen.
I call it "girl orientation". Every girl I know lacks the contextual awareness of how to position a camera. It's bizarre. It's like not one of them has ever seen a vertical video or picture before and realized how awful it is. No idea how this slips through the cracks and yet, it's essentially everyone.
It drives me insane, especially when trying to preserve memories of our family...(shaking my head right now)

I always shoot video in portrait mode and yes, it does drive me nuts when I realise. Clearly I'm a girl!

Why does 4:3 give a better picture quality? Surely the sensor is 16:9?

On my phone, 4:3 is 21mp vs. 16:9 at 16.8mp.

I didn't know until after the fact that the Google Pixel was optimized for 4:3 photos...

Motorola Turbo 2. It shoots 4k video too, but I just found that setting recently, haven't tried it.

It's amazing how many good photos are ruined by this. It makes so many things unwatchable. Videos are so much worse than photos. Photos you can excuse sometimes, there are times that you can do that. But not with videos, at no time is vertical video okay.

Photos can be portrait or landscape. There is no right or wrong, though portraits tend to be better in portrait and landscapes tend to be better in landscape, as the name suggests

Like so?

That's true. But these days, photos are faced with the same issues as videos in many cases, if they are not 16:9 then they don't have great display options. So in a lot of cases, portrait orientation does bring negatives that were not present over the traditional history of photography.

I'm confused by your statement in the context of this thread.
Are you saying you are OK with the quality hit to keep it in 16:9?

No, I'm talking about the resulting pictures. If there is a phone problem that it is not doing 16:9 well, do 4:3 and crop it if you want to display it.
