I have an 11 year old Sharp Aquos. I cut the power to the outlets that run the TV so I could run more cabling and install a new outlook.

Sadly when I turned the power back on, the TV now only displays a white screen. The dozen or so places I've found indicated that either a main logic board or a power control board had gone bad (possible from bad solider joints.

Sucks! The TV has been great, and 11 sure doesn't see that old for a TV. It's 1080p too.

      UG!

That sucks. I have an 8 year old Samsung 46" that still gets crazy compliments. Still can't believe it cause it's about 4" thick, got it from Best Buy and a friend that works there says a bunch of those ones never survived the first year because it was one of the first series that had touch strip controls on the TV.

Well I found some forums where people are talking about one of the control boards going bad. If you can find the board, it cost around $150 and takes 15 mins to replace.. sad thing is.. that was 3 + years ago.

Luckily there were newer posts where someone found out that an IC on the board is most likely the problem, they replaced the IC and his problem was fixed. This fix has been reported as a success for several people.

Sad for me is that solidering is something I have very little practice at and down right suck at it. This IC has 16 leads on each side all in under .75 inches along the side.

Lucky part is the IC cost like $4.

Most likely if power being cut killed it you have a bad capacitor somewhere.

It's very unlikely a single IC died. Everything around it like capacitors is what I would check. Anyway, that sucks 😉

My now 6 years old Toshiba 42" suddenly stopped decoding DVB-C exactly 1 week after the end of the extended 5Y warranty period. I was really p*ssed....

While I hear what you are saying, other peoples work kinda say the opposite.

But I should add that my power cut might simply be coincidence.

Several people claimed there was no power issue, the house didn't loose power, when their problem occurred.

If you have to replace the T-con board it's cheap, if it is the main board it can cost a couple hundred. At that age though, I wouldn't... It's cheaper than a new TV but the TV is just so old...

Your problem is bad verbiage. A power cut implies, system on and power failed.

I would assume that since you are intentionally performing this work, the TV was powered off first.

Sadly no - I didn't know if the outlets the TV was on were on the same circuit as where I was adding my new extension outlet. I killed 3-4 breakers before I found the one I needed to kill for the work I was doing. and the wife was watching TV.

I made a map of all. Actually if you are adding anything to circuits this is very important, Electircal code states exactly how many outlets you can have on one circuit for each purpose. (And how often they have to be spaced)

It also is important for Safety. Clearly labeled panels are required by national electric code as well.

Pretty much anyone that does much Electircal work and know what they are doing (and follows code/get permits) does.

Sucks that your monitor broke man, but enjoy your freedom from television!

I consider it one of the great evils of our time (at least the format in which it's presented currently: "buy more things peasant! More things will make you happy and fill the empty void in your life!")

But I should add that my power cut might simply be coincidence.

Several people claimed there was no power issue, the house didn't loose power, when their problem occurred.

Well that is honestly all on you also. I would never live in a house and not know exactly which outlets and lights were on which breakers.

So your new house you're going to make a map of ever outlet and light fixture that is affected by every breaker? Other than MAYBE Scott Allen Miller, I know of no one who's ever done this.

Not saying it's not a good idea, just never hear/seen/helped anyone who has done so before.

I have done it in every house I have ever lived. Rental or owned.

                                          Same here.

I guess @Dashrender and I are the only one that doesn't do this 😕

Don't worry, cable fires are just horror stories to scare little kids. Nothing a tough guy must be afraid of.
