Large enterprises tend to react slower

I found the opposite. Big ones are the most likely to be "on the spot" and "even if there is no specific opening" because they have the resources to do so and can't let a good person walk out the door. They know that the cost of interviewing is staggering and that missing a good candidate because you wanted, even an hour, is a killer to profits.

Crappy companies of any size will be bad at this. Being crappy makes them bad at it, doing it makes them crappy. It's a cycle.

There are exceptions. The company I'm talking about is great and ppl love to work there. Payment is great, pension is great, you got great career options... I could go on like this for quiet some time. But you have to "survive" HR.

Long story short: The world isn't just black and white.

My guess is a 5 digit price tag 🙂

    • Videowall system

We want to upgrade one of our research labs with a video wall featuring six large displays (4x 65" and 2x ~70") where we want to show data from approx. 8 to 16 sources, depending on the running scenario. Sending devices are scattered all around the building.

Think of it like a news room. Displays will look like this on the wall:

      18fd10ef-b664-4d3d-80db-61b9915708da-image.png

Most "grown up" systems are using all physical displays to create a single virtual screen where you can create your own grid and map sources to it. That's exactly what we want.

I've already taken a closer look to the following two systems:

      • Christie Digital's Terra Software Defined Video over Ethernet (SDVoE) https://www.christiedigital.com/about/display-technology/sdvoe/
      • Teracue ICUE https://www.teracue.com/en/solution/application-notes/teracue-icue-grid-video-wall-at-ibc-2017-63

We got a very fast UBNT based LAN (ES-48 on the access layer with 10G uplinks, three ES-16-XG as "backbone") there, so an Ethernet based solution will be fine.

      Requirements:

      • 4k screens
      • No lag (-> frame syncing)
      • capable of ~30fps
      • No extra cabling prefered -> Ethernet based

      Senders could be:

      • PCs and Servers (HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort, VGA)
      • Maybe Webcams (RTSP or something like that?)
      • Custom streams (for example, a group of research scientists and students on an airport during a flight test)

Other ideas? Opinions? Any experience with the systems mentioned above?

Yea, that makes sense. I wasn't sure if it would give an impression that I wasn't interested if I didn't follow up.

Also, after I interviewed with operations managers/etc I immediately interviewed with the HR manager. HR did tell me she's sure that I'm actively applying for other companies and to have patience as it's a long process for their hiring. I'm still going to actively apply at other places though. If I've already been eliminated I would really like to know if there was anything wrong I did so it can help me with future interviews.

Some companies need ages to respond. One example is a well known European aviation company: Can take them three or four months to get back to you. There is no "one-rule-for-all"-thing here. Large enterprises tend to react slower, but the same can be true for a 50 ppl shop. I've also seen it the other way around where a very large company sent me a contract after a few days.

Be a little more patient and call them in one or two weeks.

So in our situation, we had to open PowerShell and run diskmgmt.msc and it was able to open it. You have to have the full name.

This came about because someone installed some "Classic Shell" hijack software that removes all of the Windows Vista and later functionality to find tools. So the system is almost entirely broken.

You could also hit the "Windows" key + r, then type that in the run box and hit enter.

Only if you have the full name. diskmgmt.msc will work that way, diskmgmt will not. We tried.

Correct. I am surprised this became a post. However I understand with the whole classicshell situation.

Yeah, like I never have to know the whole name. I figured it was diskmgmt.exe. Nearly every guide only has it without the extension. And I've never had to type it out before.

Yeah, most applications for Windows are .msc or .cpl that control things as below:

      Services - services.msc
      Programs and Features - appwiz.cpl
      Disk Managment - diskmgmt.msc
      Computer Management - compmgmt.msc

For Control panel you would open just "control" and that's it so it can be inconsistent.

      And so forth.

I usually just start mmc.exe. Three simple characters to type (or seven), no need to remember names (I used to know them, but...) and access to all mmc's in one place.

      3. File -> Exec new task (or whatever it is called in English)
      4. mmc diskmgmt.msc (or mmc.exe or ...)

Just got my first bad review in my year and a half of employment.
      So there's that.

apparently I broke stuff and no one told me; so I couldn't fix it.
I've been their only point of contact since they open and refused to talk to somebody else; and some small shit about "not being knowledgeable"
I've told them I'm not their contact and they need to use the help desk because I'm not always available .

Who did the review? I bet it was your direct supervisor, wasn't it?

no review has been done; just a negative customer review from previous work done with this site as I was buried in projects, calls, and other emergency issues.

Ah. Ah well. You have a valid excuse. Take it on the nose and continue working slave ^W^W job hunting.

yeah, and i've told this customer I am not your only contact.
Will not be your only contact, it's not happening like that.

But I'm the bad guy cause "he has to fix the stuff I do"
      Which, they didn't call me.

No call... no ticket... no problem!

A bit OC, but... You won't believe what people sell - and what others actually buy. For example:

      • Fibre cables with "gold contacts" -> https://www.reddit.com/r/askscience/comments/875f5k/optical_cables_with_gold_plated_connectors/
      • RCA cable made from "old Japanese overland phone lines" wrapped in silk paper for just a few thousand dollars per meter (can't find the link ATM)
      • On guy is offering a "cable ionization service" for better sound results via eBay where I live. Approx. 50-100 EUR per cable.

So your VM is in a boot loop? That's most likely not a problem with your hypervisor but a problem with Windows. I'm not a VMWare expert, but VMware tools should be running once the operating system is up. It's basically a bunch of tools, scripts and drivers which run as "regular" applications inside your VM.

See above - we are willing to pay more but I simply can't find something like this

      • 6 Cores or more
      • 4,0 GHz base freq or faster
      • at least 32 GB RAM
      • Flash storage

can't be this hard. But I guess I will go another route: Two quad-core hosts with 16GB RAM each. QC CPUs tend to have faster clock rates.

I prefer nginx over everything else when it comes to reverse proxies. There are special purpose proxies like Traefik, but nginx is the ultimate general purpose swiss army knife.

Nice. That's what I gathered from what I read. Now to work on getting it setup. Tried once a while ago and gave up. Now to try again ^_^

You could do something like this:

      1. Install lighttpd (or something else), create a simple static page, let it listen to some random port (10080, 55555, ...). This will be your "backend server"
      2. Install nginx, let it listen to port 8080 (or something else), let it connect to Lighttpd's port as a reverse proxy.

Next step would be to use nginx as terminating SSL proxy, which means that you can connect to nginx using SSL, but nginx uses an unecrypted connection to the backend webserver (lighttpd). A more advanced configuration would use SSL on the backend server too.

I guess that you can't use Let's Encrypt certificates for your tests, because your ISP blocks port 80. Let's encrypt verifies sites by connecting to port 80. However, you may use DNS validation, but that's an advanced topic.
