Not quite, Just purchased a powershell book though.

Forget about books. They are old when they hit the shelves. I think I own about... erm... maybe 15 IT books? Most of them are 15-20 years old, some are about programming languages, two are about SharePoint installation and administration.

Essentially everything you need can be found online.

Yes, like how to attach a desktop or change a password. Takes seconds to learn. You've already done those things. Learning to deploy it isn't a bad thing to know, but not a priority. No one is ever going to hire you to set up a new AD system, just to do basic maintenance of an old one. You literally can learn that stuff in an evening. So put in your one evening and move on.

I did that already. Only thing I gotta figure out is how to add a Computer/device to the domain

BTW @WrCombs: If you want to learn something really useful, learn PowerShell. Scripting helps you to automate repetitive and error prone tasks like user creation, group assignments and so on. You could build a script to assign users to groups. That script could also inform users and managers about new assignments by mail. That's what I do with our research assistants and students, for example.

Special purpose tech. Nice to know, but IMHO no in-depth knowledge required until you want to become a [gluster/whatever] expert because it will be your next job.

Gluster and other clustered file systems become important once you start playing with Kubernetes / Rancher etc and non-volatile containers. Complex topic.

      thought?

Single host Hyper V operation is very simple. I wrote an article over at @StarWind_Software's blog a while ago which explains the basic networking stuff (the articles there are all great). Could be a good starting point.

More advanced topics include things like backups, MAC spoofing (required by VPNs, for example), VLANs vs multiple NICs (important for VPNs and firewalls for example), resource allocation, correct snapshot usage, different virtual disk types, underlying storage architecture (beware, that's the personal topic of @scottalanmiller :p) etc. IMHO, backups and the underlying storage are by far the most important things to learn.

I prefer the learning-by-doing approach. You could, for example, build a working VPN server. Try SoftEther on a Linux VM, a really cool and free to use multiprotocol VPN server. Let it authenticate inbound SSTP connections against your Active Directory. Or play around with Veeam B&R.

      Thanks, I'll look into that.

I'm not familiar with US CVs, but I'm missing things:

      • What are you good at regarding AD? GPOs? Audits? Usermanagement? Scripting? Tell 'em whatever you know.
      • Ever fixed a breaking issue? Something that could harm your employers business?
      • "Input menu data" ... no. "Normalized large amounts of data for POS systems"
      • "Built a home lab network using Ubiquiti Networks PRODUCT A, PRODUCT B, ... to learn XYZ (hell, UBNT is such a good system. Why did you choose them? Price, features, ...)"

      Hope that helps.

Tried a new dashcam today, Viofo A129 Duo (both front and rear). Good quality videos, even in the dark. Curious how good the parking mode works.

Cam is about 250 EUR incl. both cams, cables, polarization filter and a 128GB Kingston "High Endurance" microSD card. Not much compared to a Blackvue.

odd.. I work from home ; Get more done

Not odd, the entire industry has known for decades that you send people home to work, you bring them to the office for politics and to serve the egos of managers. Nearly everyone is way more productive at home. That's why nearly all good companies don't just allow it, they encourage it.

as that may be true: i was saying odd because of hours and how I have to put less hours on my time card because I worked from home.

you have to put less hours on your card because you work at home? Did I miss something?

I can only put what "work I did" so basically Billable hours only.

That's not how employment law works. . . you're there and willing and able to work. It's your bosses fault for not having things for you to do.

Stayed home with my son and worked from the house, had 6.5 hours of Billable hours on customer checks and half an hour of emails.
      7 hours.

Doesn't matter. Like @DustinB3403 said, you should have rights. If you worked for 8 hours and made 7 "billable ones", ... it's 8 hours of work.

Looks like an early rendition of WoW.

It's more like Diablo. Great game for its time

      like Diablo and Diablo 2?

More like D2 or PoE. The interesting aspect is that you can combine two classes, like rogue + mage or rune + defender.

I guess you aren't talking about Power over Ethernet?

My bad: Path of Exile, really worth it. Free 2 Play without Pay 2 Win. You can only buy chest space, character slots and cosmetics, but nothing that makes you more powerful in any way.

I agree that the game has a ton of play through and depth, but it's such a massive grind.

Yeah it's kind of a grindy genre though

I get it, I do, it's just such a long grind. Even worse than WoW. .

It's 100% worse than WoW in that regard. I am playing classic and I basically raid 1 day a week. The rest of the time I'm playing other games

What made me stop playing PoE was trading. It's fun, but it starts to become actual work at some point. Eventually, we gifted everything to friends. Hundreds of Ex (Exalted Orbs) and items worth a few thousand Ex ๐Ÿ™‚

I stopped playing after a month or so of playing solo in such an in-depth game, it was to much to take in all at once and was just a massive grind.

      Wasn't enjoyable.

There are just a few billion skill combinations ๐Ÿ˜›
