Mh, is the EdgeSwitch able to run a VPN tunnel on its own? I need to connect a "remote" office to my server room. The office is in the 3rd floor, my server room in the basement and I need to run through a "public" patch room (primary cabling junction for the building).

      Like:
3rd floor "remote" office -> fiber -> public patch room -> fiber -> my Serverroom (basement) -> Office

I doubt it has the ability to configure a VPN that seems like an edge device is needed for that.

And we're back at the point where I could need an edge router with a 10G port 😛 But the remote office could just get a 1G link, they don't need 10G up there

I have a pattern. And that pattern suggests... that I eat what the wife provides.

I plan to put more stuff on my blog, typical things you run into. PowerShell and *sh snippets, a few things here and there etc. Also recently started with an Hyper-V article on starwindsoftware.com. But I'm a bit short of time at the moment for a couple of reasons.

Any HD recommendations for a NAS? I was looking at these Seagates

Those aren't meant for running in arrays of drives, might have issues with vibration causing high seek times. I don't know off the top of my head if TLER is enabled on them or not. I'd be much more comfortable with one made to go in a NAS (TLER enabled). Seagate NAS, WE Red, or HGST (I forget the HGST models 😕 )

      ^^ this

HGST is good. I have an array with 30 NL-SAS Seagates, only a single one died in 5 years, so not bad either. Don't get desktop / consumer drivers.

Or wait a bit, Seagate announced a 60 TB SSD today 😉

    • Yet another UBNT EdgeMax vs Unifi

      Hey Mango,

well, finally went for another gig.: I'm now working at another research institute, roughly five times larger than the old one. And old is the keyword: I need to refresh literally everything, from the networks core switch up to the backup system. Challenge accepted 😉

I will go for UBNT (again), that's a no-brainer. But what would you use? Unifi or EdgeMax?

      What I need:

      • Roughly 1000 access ports (~150 PCs, lots of demonstrators and IoT devices)
      • approx. 10-15 wifi access points (AC Pro)
      • US / EdgeMax 48 (Lite)
      • US / EdgeMax 16 XG for aggregation
      • USG / EdgeMax Router (10G sync. uplink)

Now the point is: EdgeMax will give me a local console and SSH access, I can also access every single parameter. Unifi on the other hand will have lots of automated features. I do have experience with EdgeMax but I never had my hands on Unifi devices.

UNMS looks promising and EdgeMax firmware 1.7.3 with UNMS support is expected to be released soon, but I guess it's not the same as the Unifi Controller.

      Opinions?

Looked at some of the google maps pics.

I have one question.. Why the hell did you leave?

      Its beautiful.

It is... lived a few hundred meters from the seas, so basically my summer was like getting home, get your bathing clothes, get into the sea. Beer with friends. But I was offered a very good job, in the south of Hamburg. And I didn't want to drive 50km one-way every single day.

Well, wouldn't that be like 10 minutes on the autobahn?

      More like 1 hour+

Yeah, but mericans like to day dream about no-speed-limit roads.

Haha, that's the theory... In reality, we Germans have in fact the most amount of traffic signs in the world. Speed limit nearly everywhere.

Yeah, I've got it running too (simple enough, there's a docker image), but I can't add my EdgeMax switches at the moment. Or ... not without a pre-release firmware. But thanks for your thoughts.

      @thwr Due to traffic?

I do 20 miles one way a day and it can easy take over a hour because of the damn traffic. Hate it

Yes, traffic is a serious issue here at times. For example, I'm doing like 15km now and it can take up to an hour at times. Doing the 15km in 35 mins is pretty good.

    • Graphical network documentation tools

What's everyone's approach for a graphical network and server room documentation?

I'm still using Visio, but TBH, it's a PITA. I know that nearly every vendor offers stencils, but most of them are poor quality. There's a good collection of stencils over at visiocafe.com, but still ... there's always something missing. Be it PDU stencils from vendor A not matching racks from B, missing patch panels or switch stencils and so on. And drawing (lots) of wires in Visio is the best thing I could imagine... right after self-flagellation.

So what's your approach? Any (affordable) alternatives to Visio for a "graphical documentation" of a server room? TBH, I'm looking for something better than Visio for this task. Maybe something where I could even add cables, their numbers and VLANs running over them, for example.

Hmpf. I guess I will talk to our DC guys. They use some tool, I don't know which one, but I was told it is some special tool for rack and cable documentation.

I bet there is some open source tool that does the same job.

Same with our HP desktops, failure rates near zero.

I have a Z420 at work and it's awesome. We bought some new beefy Z400's that are working really well also. 128GB RAM and dual 6 core Xeons.

Fujitsu isn't bad either. No faults in nearly 6 years, apart from a fan on an AMD FirePro. Decent dual-socket workstation are available too: Celsius R5xx line.
