New York City In Winter???
My daughter is going to New York City for the Christmas / New Year period.
We live in Australia, & not experienced the cold that can happen in NYC at that time of year. It barely reaches zero degrees where we live year on year.
My daughter's wondering what she should take clothes wise?
Should be dressed top to toe in gear you'd wear to the Antarctic, or do people just normally go from building to building and can get by with just good jackets and boots??
Thanks for any help.

pondering life choices and trying to decide what's next.
Also wondering why I can't seem to stay focused on getting certifications as I know they make me more valuable.. dont know..
An wise person once told me, "You can figure out what drains your energy by looking at the things you procrastinate." It is likely that the certs you're looking at doing aren't in things you really enjoy doing, for whatever reason. Once you accept that fact you can evaluate if this is just a task that has to be done even if you don't, or if there needs to be another path taken.
Im at the age where I dont know what I want to do and where I want to go.
It's all trying to figure stuff out .What you want to do changes every few years, it does for me anyway. Follow your interests is probably the most reliable thing to do. You have to be able to get out of bed wanting to go to work, more so when you're younger.
I've just spent the past 10 years purely going to work for the money. I live in a rural area with very little IT around so I've had to sit in this job as it's all there is in this area. 10 years with no chance of promotion, no chance of wage increase, elementary work with very little challenge. No peer interaction, there is job security however. It's done my head in a few times.
I've only got another 5 years to sit out before I'm pulling the plug and leaving the workforce.
If I had my time again, I'd, I'd, I don't know actually.
I got a headache now, too much moaning.

got an interview for an upgraded position within the same department.
been close to 20 years since I had a job interview.
I used to sweat over them, this time 'round, i'm maybe too laid back.
8 hour round trip and loss of a days pay just to get to the interview.Congrats on the interview. Boo for losing pay.
You could be sneaky and book the day off with annual leaveSelf employed mate, contractor. Have to go into the city & meet with other more important contractors & be interviewed by them to see if I cut the mustard.
Ah, I see. Best of luck with the interview and the travels.
It costs $62 to park for 2 hours in the middle of the CBD, ouch.
Not a bad interview, don't think I went too well, I have a feeling they were looking for someone different, possibly not as good looking HAHA!
I'm not holding my breath.
I can't believe the wealth in the big smoke. We moved out 20 years ago and people seem so much more wealthy.
I saw what I thought was a McLaren MP4-12C it wasn't but it was something equally erotic, a Ferrari 458 and a Lambo Murcielago all on the same day.
Disgusting wealth when there are so many struggling.Good grief! They really don't want people driving into the city then.
Well, you can't go around being a distraction to customers.I used to work in a wealthy suburb and I had a super expensive car count... just for giggles/wtf-how-rich-are-you-lot!? I counted 5 in one day (in a 2km stretch of road).
Maserati's, Ferraris, Lambos... not to mention the expensive-but-not-quite-super-rich carsYep, 5 in 2 kms, that's a good hit rate.
Usually, now, I see Scania's, Volvo's, Kenworth's, Iveco's, and a few Peterbilts.

at work?
No, that is what hangovers are for
No, that's what work is for. it gives you time to sober up so you can back into it again when you knock off.
Do you mean work exist to sober up so you can get drunk again?
If so that is some Socrates shit, right there.
Immanuel Kant was a real pissant
who was very rarely stable.
Heidegger, Heidegger was a boozy beggar
who could drink you under the table.

I wish that we could post it here. So crazy. And just so angry that Windows 10 had issues. Angry at us, for Windows issues. Issues she had before she called.
Yeah of course, IT guys make all the problems. I had a bloke wanted me to ring Microsoft one time and tell them to change something.
People are really great, I love 'em.

Applying to this today:
https://portal.dynamicsats.com/JobListing/Details/3c11c466-26e0-488b-b83a-f4ee9ddb3766/326bf964-3811-ea11-a811-000d3a5a7a5cWell good luck with it bud. I'll tell you what i've worked out over time, job descriptions rarely accurately reflect what's involved in a job.
They usually describe a role that appears much more difficult than the job actually is. So don't be put off by something that sounds like it may be above you.

RE: What are you listening to? What would you recommend?
Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures.
An absolute classic album of the 70s punk era, one of my favourite albums of all time.

Yuck... just got a bunch of equipment back from a guy who got fired... who was out with pink eye a couple of weeks before he got fired. Glad I keep rubbing alcohol at my desk. Too bad I'm out of nitrile gloves.
That's lovely. . . I've never had to deal with that myself fortunately.
I once had someone hand me their computer and then sneeze on it right as they were passing it to me though. . . that was gross.
I would have purposely dropped that computer right on their foot, and then make them sanitize it.
Yeah I really wanted too. . . I rubbed the laptop down with rubbing alcohol and told them to leave.
you guys are soft, you should try working in schools, everthing is covered with slime & goo & snot and stuff that sticks. Tables, desks, ipads, laptops, screens, mice.
And then there's the stuff the kids leave on the equipment.
I worked in educational IT for a couple of weeks... ran out screaming, will NEVER do that again.
Yep. I reckon the next harshest thing for IT gear is warfare. Kids destroy everything, it total chaos most of the time.
You're supporting a user base that just doesn't care about the gear they use, they stand on it, sneeze on it, cry on it, eat off it.
AND THEN THEY INTRODUCE BYOD!

I'm back from my interview. That's the first time that I know of that I've been on the news.
Interview for what?
My car was towed illegally (which is really just stealing it) and that is a big thing down here. I won in court, but the towing company just didn't bother to pay. They run a scam with the apartment complex where one of them publishes one set of parking rules, and the other another, and then tow you for anything they want. It's illegal, but they've paid off the state to look the other way.
The state is aware and an attorney is dealing with it. But the state gets paid to let them do this, so they don't have much incentive to look into it deeply or quickly.
However, a senator has stepped in, so things are happening.
Holy crap mate, this could turn into a Netflix thriller.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
moan 1.
was on a 1 hour webex training course just yesterday, they rolled webex out statewide for all schools about 2-3 years back. It's just beginning to be used now.
first they trained everyone up, then they trained the support personnel a few weeks (yesterday) later.moan 2.
watched a taped presentation of a meeting that was cancelled. At one stage the presenter went off at some techs whose school was attacked by ransomware saying if they had done as they were told, to implement offsite backups, they could have recovered. Then went on to say how we all must have offsite backups.- I can't recall ever being told to use offsite backups. 2. there is barely enough money to put PCs on desktops at 90% of schools. 3. most schools have no IT support, if USB HDDs are used, no one will take them offsite.
Presenter then went on to acknowledge all these points and said if you need help with an offsite backup solution to let them know.
There were 2 presenters in this meeting, neither of which introduced themselves.
I think professionalism is just a past thing, I rarely see things done properly or courteously, everything seems to just be half arsed.
That webex training was done by cisco people. It was full of spelling mistakes.
It's easy to look professional. Check your spelling, wait to speak, let others speak, keep what you're saying on topic, introduce yourself, introduce others.
Shit I must be getting old as evidenced by the above.
