Relaxing after a long day, have some light customer work to do here in a bit but otherwise not much.
Light customers are good, they're easier to throw out the door.

it's the correct key, because once you get death, there is only space left.

back working on site from this week, don't like it, don't like it all.
because you like working from home better? or because virus is running rampant there?
i much prefer working from home, more comfortable, better lighting, better seating, cleaner, less disruptive.

For reference, the Acer Aspire 7 got me a nice quad core Ryzen 7 (equivalent of an entry level i7, quite powerful), 8GB (but I can expand to 32GB), 512GB NVMe SSD, 15.6" nice looking screen, nice feeling keyboard, nice trackpad, decently thin and light for the size, solid build feel, and a really nice discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 with 4GB. All for $749.
Oh yep. Looks like that model is around $AU1300 - $AU1500 down here.
Glad you like it.

left a word out.
would free/truenas run AS a vm in hyper-v?
trying to keep myself busy, it's quieter than a cemetery at midnight atm
The general consensus that I've seen here is
- a NAS OS is redundant and hampers efforts to repair things.
- You're better off using something like Fedora, CentOS, Ubuntu Server, or your favourite flavour
so do you mean, just build up another server consisting of an OS that support staff are familiar with, fill it with disk and use that?

hey @siringo now that the borders are less difficult and stuff, you still planning on your epic drive?
The SA part might be a sticking point at the momenthey, how you doing? yep, still waiting to see when the indigenous communities will open back up, we need to drop into them to get fuel.
it's looking like that may not happen until 2022, but we'll see.
it's going be peak hour out there when it all opens up again & because of that I may not go immediately.

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
got asked if I could get some data off a 3.5" floppy yesterday.
thought about it and thought, if it's on a 3.5" floppy then the info can't be too important, otherwise it would have already been transferred onto something else. Also thought, if the data is only on that then there's a very good chance the data isn't what they think it is.
Sorry, can't help.

in 1990 i was in a NetWare training course.
the instructor quiped about how poor apple's attempt at networking was.
their hardware is top notch imo, but their devices are so damn finicky when used by more than a single person.
their attitude to multi user hasn't changed in 30 years. -

@scottalanmiller ipad management behind an auth'd proxy. they're just bloody unfriendly devices.

@siringo well better to get it done then forget what you did in 6 months.
“Who the hell did this? That’s a terrible solution! It makes no sense… oh wait, that was me.”
Crap. I can't believe I did what. What was I thinking?! Was I thinking?! I'd better write it down this time.
Next Event: Repeat.
hahahahaha.
currently writing up a doc on how remote staff can reboot switches, diagnose led displays etc.
Lots of pictures, no tech words, just words like box, thing, light. This is where many IT people go wrong with doco for non tech people. They think the reader is interested, or wants to learn or should know about what is going on and what things are. Most people don't give a toss, they just want to get back to their work so they don't have to work back after hours to complete it.
