@DustinB3403 said in Synology File Server slow compared to QNAP.:

How specifically was the QNAP and Synology configured beyond the RAID10?

Was the QNAP used as Block Storage and the synology the same over iSCSI?

While I don't remember exactly block storage, one thing is, on QNAP, there was no Snapshot option enabled, but on Synology I have enabled Snapshot for data protection (one of the reason I went with Synology), so, could it be the reason for slow performance? and there's no iSCSI involved in both cases, using simple shared folder.

      How to overcome this issue?

    • Synology File Server slow compared to QNAP.

      Hi all,

I set to push the Windows server shared folders data (around 6.5TB) to backup to QNAP NAS box (4 Drives - RAID 10) using EaseUS Todo Server backup software..It was okay for any kind of restoring of files requirements etc.

Later, it became insufficient space, so I got new Synology NAS Box (8 Drives - RAID 10) with increased storage and same purpose.

Only QNAP NAS Box replaced with Synology NAS Box, everything else remains same like network, server backing up data, server etc.

Now problem is, I can see some 40% low performance when I compared to QNAP earlier I was using. Now I'm having issues with recovering of data backed up, since it is too slow, and cannot rely with this performance.

      What I did?

      1. I tried by updating Synology firmware and restart, no progress.
      2. I tried by connecting directly to Synology through LAN cable, to see if there's something making slow over the network, but even if connected directly or over the network, same performance.

      Appreciate your suggestions!

@openit said in You know any IT Security Awareness (from Home Users to Enterprise) resource?:

Is there any focused and dedicated resource available for IT Security Awareness which is covered from Home Users to Enterprise?

When I say Home Users to Enterprise, it is covering everyone who uses Internet/Technology though which user have a risk of privacy and security, either user can be Home Makers, students, blue color worker or people working in SMEs or Giant companies, government sector, so we are talking about around 3.5 Billion people.

I am aware of Knowbe4, getgophish and many others, but they are focused only for companies or business users right?

And there are so many internet users other than Business Users, so my core question was not addressed?

How about any resource in form of Udemy/Coursera or something good, which is focused and dedicated only for IT Security Awareness, which is covering Home users, students, blue color job holders and of course, SMB/Giants. And for SMBs/Giants with Assessment, Test, Training and Result -Assessment -goes on?

If not available one, I am thinking to build one, I welcome your ideas and suggestions 🙂

      Appreciate your response!

Myself I did research, I found most them are targeted for staff working on computer/email in companies, not all (generic users not covered), that too very expensive for some features.

I can see a lot of resource available on the web, but scattered and not focused.

    • What are necessary/worthy/affordable tools for SMB?

      Hi all,

I'm talking about company sized with around 110 staff, all windows, most useful service is File Server service, using Office 365 for emails, not hosting website/email locally.

We have Office 365 essentials for email, but no additional tools like spam filter.
We have general antivirus ESET, but no specialized anti-malware, anti-ransomware, anti.....
We have firewall, but not additional add on like Outbound filters, etc.....
We don't have vulnerability scanners, commercial tools to monitor heartbeat of machines and network devices, no opendns kind of service etc...

So my question is, most of the time SMB's can't afford tools/services like spam filter, specialized anti-malware(malwarebytes), vulnerability scanner etc., does it mean we need to leave these things since we don't have tools? Are these tools really worthy for this size of company? are they necessary?

      Thanks for response!

@openit said in Is someone using OneDrive for Business 1TB space to backup data/system?:

My core idea is to improve more backup options for few of our critical users and systems, by adding ODfB (cloud like) along with local.

Your core idea is wrong because you are using a sync service as a backup, and that is not the intent.

Can you hack things to make it do it? Sure. But it will never be a reliable solution.

I can understand how bad to use sync service as a backup. That's why I am here to put my plans and know possibilities, good and bad things.

Some of users never use OneDrive at all. What if I say, I will backup to OneDrive, where it is not used for syncing purpose, and backup software supports pushing data to OneDrive storage directly (if possible, is it??).....

You can use Veeam Endpoint, but it does require a license to backup to ODfB. That is more of a premium feature. Otherwise, you're tied to some type of local storage, whether on your network or to your PC.

I was just giving an example of free software like Veeam, if it requires license, I will look for other free or cheaper option.

    • Is someone using OneDrive for Business 1TB space to backup data/system?

      Hi there,

We have been switched to O365 two years ago, and not utilizing 1TB space on OneDrive.

I would like to know if someone is using OneDrive for Business 1TB to backup the data or whole windows system ? and how you people are doing it?

As of now we don't have backup setup for workstation, but I wish to utilize free resources like Veeam endpoint free and OneDrive 1TB space to backup critical users to make my life easier.

Note: Earlier I have tried to setup desktop software of OneDrive to share files from app instead of going to Web OneDrive, for some reason desktop app not working well.

I would be great, if file version on OneDrive can help in virus infection etc. in case of recovery.

      Appreciate your help!

Corning and imaging are two totally different things as the others have said. You need to define what you actually want to do here more clearly.

Okay. I believe I want to know more about Imaging. Actually the curiosity to know about Imaging arise from my previous post, where @scottalanmiller mentioned "Imaging should take around thirty minutes and, in reality, we are often getting that number lower and lower." It was regarding restoring the system when it is not working properly.

    • What exactly imaging software, any open source or free options ?

      Hi all,

I know little about Imaging software.

I think we are talking about Imaging backup which doesn't reside in the system itself like Recovery Partition, through which we can restore the system to Factory default settings.

And I am aware of cloning software like CloneZilla, through which we can restore to that specific time (programs and settings). It doesn't seems practical for me to do it individually.

So we are talking about using at work and network backup/centralized one, preferably with an Agent will do good work ? Is that FOG kind of software referred to be as Imaging Software ?

I always had storage problem to try or start doing imaging to make things easier. Following are few confusions/queries :

      1. I believe imaging is the system backup, excluding data (or other partitions), unless we include.

      2. Lets say we are trying to take image of Windows machine (system/C partition only), if it's partition size is 100GB and used some 44GB for OS, what size imaging software will occupy after backing up ? 100 GB or 44 GB ?

      3. There will be any incremental and schedule kind of imaging backups ? to take back to working stage ? as it's not practical to take the PC back to zero (fresh Windows)...

      4. If FOG is an example for software referring to as reimage in this thread (https://mangolassi.it/topic/15746/why-restart-works-technical-reason/22)
So I need to setup FOG of some linux server, add storage (lets say some NAS) and take image backups on network, how will be the performance ? I am afraid it will kill the network. So user can work while image backup is going on ?

      5. Whether single windows image will work for different model machines (HP, Dell, Lenovo etc.), since they have different components and drivers ?

      Thanks for response !

    • What is SodiumSuite ? Is that ready for production use ?

      Hello all,

I heard of SodiumSuite a lot here in this community. So I have registered, and I found it to be some agent-based monitoring and management tool, so I ran the agent on some test VM, it didn't shown anything on my account on https://sodium.waxquixotic.com after few days I logged in again, I found it pulled the information of Windows system, but cannot do anything like add/remove software, windows updates etc.

So what exactly SodiumSuite is ? is that alternative for Manage Engine's Desktop Central, Comodo One RMM Suite ?

where we can manage (add/remove) software, install patches, remote control etc. ?

I am seeing so many things coming soon on my account, is that ready for production use at all ?

      What's the official site ?

      Thanks !

@eddiejennings said in Why restart works ? Technical reason ?:

I'll often have users do a restart, but if the issue is recurring, then I'll take the time to try to find the root cause.

      Instead of re-imaging?

I just wonder, how we can simply jump to re-imaging or reset or re-installation, unless necessary or investigating the issue, it may repeat if cause is not from that computer...?
