For the top one, the kids would be able to play while you work, but mosquitos and heat would still be an issue.
For the bottom one, just change out the glass on top for something opaque and we may be onto something. Bring in one good hail storm and that whole thing is busted up.
He'll need air conditioning... If you use something opaque for the top, you could stick on the RV kind of roof AC unit.

RE: Visual Resumes?
It may be better to just link to your Blog on your resume and mention you're an active member on IT discussion forums such as ML and SW.

@JaredBusch Of course right as I stop reading his post it's right there..
Thanks.
@Tim_G what GPO do you have set to disable this?
But to specifically answer your question, it's here:
Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search >
- Do not allow web search = Enabled
- Don't search the web or display web results in Search = Enabled
- Don't search the web or display web results in Search over metered connections = Enabled

RE: Using Bing for growing organic and paid search traffic
I think it's that high because it's mostly accidental searches via Windows 10 lol.
But seriously, I use Bing 98% of the time purposely, because I really don't notice any difference between the two results-wise, plus I like the rewards system for using Bing (free money is always nice).
But if you are serious about running an Ad campaign, you should do it on all of the major search engines. The whole point is to get traffic to your product to make money... why limit it to only one search engine when many millions use both?

RE: What did you have for lunch or dinner today?
The whole idea of this, is so I don't spend the last 20-30 years of my life in pain... hard to walk and basic functions hindered.
Often times, you'll see someone hit their 60s or 70s (or even earlier!), then spend the next 20 years with health problems, whatever they are.
When I retire, I want to be fit and travel with my equally healthy wife until I die... preferably not in a wheelchair or next to a cane.
It's the same kind of investment you make with a 401k or savings, so you can live after you stop working. You need to do the same thing with your health!

RE: How Much and Long Does the A+ Typically Influence IT Hiring?
@scottalanmiller said in How Much and Long Does the A+ Typically Influence IT Hiring?:
how much does having or not having the A+ affect the initial job hunt process (how much does it speed it up, how much extra pay does it produce) and how quickly does it fall off of mattering (two years, five years, ten years, etc.)
This completely depends on the job.
Applying to a CIO position? Then it has no effect.
Applying to an IT Systems Administrator position? Again, no effect.
Applying to PC bench tech job? Then it is completely relavent and I can imagine that having listed on your CV may more likely put you ahead of someone who does not.

current setup:
They have arround 25 employees
Mixed environment (80% mac , 20% windows)
They use dropbox for filesharing and its over 4 TB of data. (displayed in the admin console)
they experienced alot of growth the last 12 months.
the storage went up with 1TB the last 6 montsI don't see any need for Windows Server here what so ever. I wouldn't even consider that at this point unless there's a lot more to it you aren't sharing with us.
To cover your storage needs for the next 2-3 years (well, as best as you can plan for while keeping costs down), I wouldn't put money in to any storage solution that yields less than 8 TB of usable storage.
I'd seriously consider something like Synology. Going by the info you gave, that at quick glance seems like the best type of option for you. Also, as travishdh1 said, I can confirm they do sync with Dropbox.

I need to find a way of initially self-fund this company. Nobody around me is rich. My credit is not that great and I am starting from $0.
There is no point in fixing computers around me when you can just buy another $300 walmart special (man we are so wasteful). Small MSP has no money in it. I'm thinking of blogging/affiliate marketing in order to try to raise the money. Only problem is just about everybody and their dog has a blog (you see what I did there). Any other ideas?
A day job.
That just pays the bills for now.
There's always the path of Deuce Bigalow...

RE: What Are You Doing Right Now
Apparently in a small business it's better to run the full Windows server standard gui on a hypervisor instead of HyperV Server:

Is the line stating references are available upon request needed? If a potential employer needs references, won't they ask unless they see that?
I don't think that it is, it's always assumed. There should always be references, and they should always be by request. As long as it all fits on one page, it's okay either way.
I wouldn't put references on the resume... that part comes much later and IMO has no place on resumes.

the synology as internal backup
As for back up, you could get a less expensive NAS to keep a backup of your main data. Plus some super cheap S3 storage would do as a cold archive in addition to a cheap backup NAS.

No question that the A+ has its problems (maybe nothing else.) So more constructive might be... what should the A+ have on it?
I think they should retire the A+ and come up with something new... like: CompTIA Tech+ or something.

RE: Resume Revamp - Advice on Format/Layout and Type of Content

Hi everyone!
It's been over 8 years since I updated my resume. I know that there has been some changes in what employers want to see (and don't). I am looking to revamp my resume and start applying for some more lucrative positions.
As indicated by the title, I am looking for advice on a resume layout and what to present that will increase my chances of being interviewed/hired. How much detail do you go into for projects? Do you itemize/list technologies you have experience with?
Thanks in advance.
I actually used one of the built in Word resume templates, slightly altered a bit to fit my needs. It worked out well.

One business, two countries?
Let's say "MyCompany" is an IT consulting firm.
Is there a need or benefit to be registered in the U.S. at all, if a foreign consultancy is to do business with U.S. customers?
Is it best or more beneficial to also register a "MyCompany LLC" in the U.S.? Is it required? Is there a "trust/emotional" thing for U.S. companies to not choose a foreign company?
Is there restrictions on headquarters location?

WTF. . . thinks he should spend $23,000 to license a single VM on a 4 node cluster. . .
Data center licensing for each host.. . . otherwise.. don't be dumb and limit where that VM can run. . .
I think he want's to spend $23,000 to license a DC virtual machine on a 4-node cluster, each node having 2x 24-core CPUs (48 cores total per node). Stupid.
If I was being forced to run it on that cluster, I'd just buy a single Datacenter license (with SA) for only one node, and make sure all Windows VMs run on that single node, and if that if any failover occurs, they all go together... failing over all together to a different node. That way, the datacenter license can transfer with the VMs.

I also have been seeing a lot of graphical graduated scoring for skill sets. Like this-
Is that really a thing?
It probably is a thing, but not a good one. Just a waste of space IMO. Something is either a skill or its not. If you don't know it well enough to consider it a strong skill, leave it off the resume.
