      @vhinzsanchez

There are a few touchpoints for SNMP scanning and inventory.

      • setup and associate your ip ranges and snmp credentials in the plugin's network tab
      • configure a task / job and associate it with one of your deployed nodes (typically the server)
      • if things don't work, debug in command line from the server, hope you're using linux as it's much simpler to use for this. There might be additional perl dependencies if you're trying to use snmpv3. You might need to use an snmp testing tool from your workstation to validate that the devices are replying to the snmp values that you're using.

Had deployed SW on-premise in my previous employment, I do not know how it will fare out after reading the news earlier. It has been rock solid even when others had an issue logging in when a problem struck...it seemed that my installation was not affected then.

I've tried and really liked osTicket but I am now testing GLPI. I was looking into a ticketing system with inventory and the features which tied the ticket to a person and/or hardware and keep its history (like SW). GLPI with FusionInventory seemed to be just that.

Let me know if you need any help, I've been dealing with the inventory side of that combo for going on 3 years now. Going to be getting more into the data-center / server room management side of it with the management and financials stuff next week.

Yup, the network scanning inventory (fusion inventory) is where I stopped at. I have installed agent on 2 computers successfully but as it seems, it was not updating. It was not due to how it was programmed, rather, it is due to my limited understanding on how to configure it.

This should be set and forget so long as you're installing as a service (or daemon if *nix) and your configuration file / registry entries are good.

Another wall I hit is that all emails (new tickets and responses) have different time-stamp (15 hours late).

Sounds like a possible issue with the php timezone config on your server

    • RE: Laptop setup - multiple monitors, etc - suggestions?

We've got a bunch (~50 or more) WD15 docks deployed. Where we've seen them be flakey is if the user has multiple monitors and several power hungry USB devices plugged into the dock. Even with the bigger power supply on the dock (there are 2 or 3 wattages available IIRC) we've had to mandate some users to use the dock's power and their laptop's AC brick at the same time.

I've been testing the WD19 with the 180W power and so far it's been solid for USB, network and audio. Haven't played with the video out options yet but I think it should be OK so long as all of the firmware updates have been done.

    • RE: Comparing Server CPU Capabilities?

Another element to consider is how the newer gen CPUs deal with the Spectre / Meltdown and friends when compared to the older gen of CPU. Also keep in mind that if you're going single socket your RAM options will be limited compared to dual socket. I'm not saying that one or the other is better, as it all depends on budget and purpose, but I didn't notice either factor being mentioned when skimming the thread.

    • RE: URL Redirect at the Windows Workstation?

If the destination is a simple static IP you could add a line in the hosts file. But if it's more complex than that I'm not aware of anything that you can do on the workstation directly. Maybe not an option based on your initial ask, but you could probably do something if you've got admin on the local DNS server.

Don't know if we'd be syncing off-site and cloud daily. We're already syncing to TO and it's taking about 4 to 6 hrs daily IIRC. Just checked with our backup lead and daily delta typically runs anywhere from 200GB to 500GB.

@notverypunny so 500TB on premise, connected to Tape that someone carries home, to cloud as well and then to a remote office?

Not 500 TB and the tapes would live in a fire-safe on-site but otherwise that's one of the rough outlines that we're looking at.

So your boss is looking for a throat to choke if things go sideways. Or is he looking for a provider who simply has support channels?

Yes to both... wants to be able to throw someone under the bus as opposed to having his head cut off.

      What about something like Zmanda?

Interesting, I'll have to dig into it. I'd looked at their community stuff before hadn't spent much time on the supported / enterprise-level options.

@notverypunny are you trying to build a solution that lives on premise? Are you considering skipping the 3-2-1 rule entirely?

Possible setup would be an appliance here at the main site connected to an LTO-8 tape setup with sync to the cloud and maybe another sync with our Toronto office.

    • All in one backup appliances

With all of the crypto / ransomware garbage happening now our team has been asked to look at overhauling the company's backup posture and methods. Boss-man says that community / FOSS / opensource is off the table from a CYA perspective in the event that it were ever to go sideways (the old "nobody ever got fired for buying IBM" mentality, but I can't really argue with it).

We're currently using a mix of ArcServe's software products; their 9000 series of appliances looks interesting. Does anyone on here have any experience with these units? I've been trying to find a competitor / comparable product and from what I see it would take multiple unitrends boxes for comparable capacity, and that's if you can get your hands on the HW as CDW has them (as well as Barracuda's enterprise level gear) as recently discontinued.

    • RE: How to tell if your hardware is compatible w/ I/O Acceleration Technology

@rjt said in How to tell if your hardware is compatible w/ I/O Acceleration Technology:

In the Dell r720 "Lifecycle Controller" --> "System BIOS Settings" --> "Integrated Devices" sub section, both default to disabled:

      • "i/oat dma engine" defaults to disabled

      • "SR-IOV Global Enable" defaults to disabled

Hoping "i/oat dma engine" enables Remote DMA or RDMA over ConvergedEthernet or RoCE for hyperconverged storage. Thoughts?

If running xcp-ng, would you turn both of these on nowadays or just the SR-IOV "Virtualization Mode" in the "Integrated NICs" of "Device Level Configuration"?

      cea0f490-d81e-4a8a-8d7c-8a5241476642-image.png

AFAIK neither will enable RDMA / RoCE. SR-IOV requires that the NICs and hypervisor be compatible, it basically splits up a physical NIC into x number of virtual NICs that do a real HW passthrough to the assigned guests.

FWIW, IOAT DMA appears to have been depreciated in Linux and Windows according to it's Wikipedia entry

    • How-To / Community Documentation & Resources

I searched really quickly and didn't find a section or category where folks have been posting useful how-to guides or articles for the community. There are a couple of things that I've worked through lately that could probably be useful to others, just don't know exactly where to stash it on here. As an example, how to make a uefi bootable USB to automatically apply BIOS settings for Dell. In all honesty, my motivation here is as much to share with the community as have stuff like this publicly documented so I can find it if I need to re-do or update it for my own needs.

Late to the party but I'd look at DeepFreeze even if you've had bad luck with similar products in the past. It's saved us a ton of headaches for our conference rooms and even some of the machines in the manufacturing plant.
