Would something like Zentyal be appropriate?
Just a package of Samba 4 which is just a third party AD. So this is just another way of saying to use Samba, which is another way of saying "keep AD."

If the question is "how can I more affordably do AD", then Zentyal is a great AD distro. But if the question is "how do I ditch AD", Zentyal isn't ditching it at all.
Fair enough, I read "without AD" and my mind went to "without M$"

RE: Safest place to buy refurbished switches? xbyte, servermonkey, etc?posted in IT Discussion
FWIW we've never had problems with HP's lifetime warranty for switches regardless of where they were purchased. New, used, refurb....

Not sure but Arcserve might fit the bill. Although it would require Windows server(s) and is probably very close to Veeam's architecture.

On the condition that meta bitching about who downvoted you should be a ban

Meta-bitching, nice...

Use wine to run putty? What do you dislike about the native app / what are you looking for in a replacement?

We're all grownups, so I'd say make it public.

So the ongoing saga that is this user.
This morning - the PC had been up for 4 days (which really shouldn't be an issue) when using Excel - sheets were left open over the weekend for sure! - the search function on the open screen would not allow them to click into the search box. It just sat there dumb... you could close it, but nothing else. When you clicked, literally nothing happened.
Rebooting 'fixed' the issue.
The computer has 16 GB RAM and 256 GB NMVe SSD.
Pending install for updates?

LOL - I considered posting that too - I looked at it - but in my case, it wasn't giving me any option for disabling Meltdown, only Spectre. Now that could be because on AMD A9 hardware I might not be able to disable Meltdown mitigation.
Ahh... I don't suppose there's an option to flip them to Linux? We don't have anything AMD with the exception of a few ancient machines so I can't check.

RE: Trying to find a good, on-premises, multi-department help desk applicationposted in IT Discussion
@dave247
Maybe I got spoiled on my first couple of ticket system experiences, but they were more or less annexes or complimentary to CRM / ERP systems, so you had an client centric / customer-centric view of the situation as well as the user's history... JitBit, or at least the way that we've got it set up doesn't associate the ticket to users or assets / equipment so it's not readily apparent if the problem is with the user, the HW or something else -
RE: Remote management of employees personal cell phones ...posted in IT Discussion
We had looked into a few MDM options a couple of years back and the citrix one (XenMobile IIRC) basically put all of the corporate data into an isolated "bubble" that the company could wipe without touching the personal data on the device, either on corp or BYOD.

RE: Excel freezingposted in IT Discussion
Excel... check the specific spreadsheet(s) workbook(s) that they're having problems with.... we've had a few cases where people are causing problems with data references and other wonderful things that they find when googling for a solution. Like statically referencing another file on their desktop or personal share and then sending the file to someone else only to find that it doesn't work for the other person.

RE: Trying to find a good, on-premises, multi-department help desk applicationposted in IT Discussion
We've just starting using JitBit. They took the full on prem with access to source so one of the programmers has been tweaking things. I'm not a huge fan but it seems to be working.
I can't say anything bad about GLPI but it might be more than what the OP is looking for.
Request Tracker provides a massive framework to play with for ticketing and such, I'm 90% sure that one of my former gigs was using it with some minor rebranding but it is really one of those situations where the sky's the limit on what it seems to be able to do.

RE: Massive Searchable Document/File Repositoryposted in IT Discussion
@hubtechagain Minimal to be honest. I'd looked at it a couple of times for replacing file servers but the combination of intertia and overall lack of buy-in from the stakeholders meant that I never really got past the testing / demo / proof of concept phase.

RE: Massive Searchable Document/File Repositoryposted in IT Discussion
I can't say for sure, but I think what you're looking for surpasses nextcloud's feature set.
With 30 TB you're getting into serious DM space. I'm not sure if it'll suit your needs, but Alfresco might be worth a look.

RE: 2-in-1 laptop for a C-Levelposted in IT Discussion
@wrx7m
We ordered a rugged Dell laptop for one of the sales guys last year and it's dock was still a "real" dock. Not E-dock compatible but similar style / execution. -
RE: 2-in-1 laptop for a C-Levelposted in IT Discussion
For the Dells, the newest dock (WD19 IIRC) is much better (than the WD15) based on preliminary testing and a couple that we've deployed so far. I'll strongly suggest getting the version with the 180W power so as to minimize the chances of your user having to connect the dock and the laptop's power if he's got some especially power hungry gadgets connected to the dock.
Although, knock on wood we haven't had many problems with the WD15 lately, so maybe the latest FW has fixed some of the bugs that we'd run into initially.
