    • RE: Identifying CAT 6 Connections

I have the Fluke IntelliTone Pro 200 and if you don't have any of the jacks plugged in to anything, it's the best toner I have used. For speed, this would be a two person job.

If all the jacks are plugged in to switches, the NetScout LinkRunner will probably be faster and it would turn the job in to a one person job.

Spiceworks will tell you what's plugged in to each port, but it could take a day or two of scans.

    • ever see a ping like this?

I was pinging a printer to see if it was online, and noticed something weird. The ping time increments, and then drops back down again cyclically. Other printers of the same model aren't doing that and there are no print jobs going to it. I was pinging it because a print monitor application was suck at "Initial check of printer status..."

      PS C:> ping 192.168.2.65 -t

    • RE: Verizon blocking port 465 to godaddy?

Insult to injury, the client called GoDaddy, and this was their response:

Godaddy says they have no way to whitelist or unblock IP addresses and that we must have some encryption attached to our outgoing mail that no one else has that their server wont allow.

My client asked to talk to the level 2 guy and the level 1 guy on the phone said he couldn't because it was all done by chat. So he asked him to paste that error message to him and explain it. His response? "You should use webmail - it works every time."

I feel like that should be cross posted to the "I can't even" thread.

It's a factor of adding a password to wifi ("Secure Wifi" Now) keeps out the random people. In theory, and in most cases where we talking about using secure wifi, at least in my experience, you have more of an idea who is on the network. So, familiarity I guess moreso than quantity.

The day I can tell by looking at a person that they can hack a SSL tunnel will be the day I start wearing a cape.

    • Screen Connect - shortcut to specific host

Does anyone know if you can create a shortcut on a Windows desktop that will connect directly to a host in screen connect? I did some googling and only found some posts from 6 years ago and it seemed to require files to be dropped on the server, which doesn't seem right.

I have a user that I'm switching from team viewer and right now they can connect to their work machine with a double click, and I'd like to make it that easy for them in screen connect.

Is this on your air gapped network? I only ask because Server 2003. Is it even 64 bit? If not, it's a pain deploying drivers to 64 bit clients.

OK, who am I kidding? Printer drivers are a pain no matter what the situation.

    • RE: Wireless Projectors -WPA/WPA2 and Radius Enabled

You don't say what's doing your RADIUS, but if it's a Windows server and for that SSID you have a policy that checks for domain membership, a SSL cert, etc, that's obviously not going to work with the projector.

You might need to make a new SSID with a different policy. Unfortunately the projector probably won't let you do anything more than put in a WPA2 password. On the RADIUS side, you could limit the connection by MAC, that's easily spoofed, so I guess it depends on how secure you want your network to be.

If security is a top priority, a cable might be the best way to do it.

I read that the Veeam backup is around 10x faster than a windows server backup. Normally this would sound like a marketing ploy but everyone here on ML seems to swear by Veeam. Can anyone confirm? The windows backup took 3 days to complete, thats why I ask.

I can confirm that it's way faster than ArcServe. That's what I moved to Veeam from. I can also confirm that the message level restore works well as well.

@momurda said in Exchange 2010 Hard Drive Space Issues:

Just curious, how long does it take your Exchange to start serving mail when you restart it for updates/changes/etc?

For the exchange servers I've run, once all the exchange services have started it will pass mail. The time it takes for all the services to start depends on the hardware. The trick to a faster reboot with an Exchange server is to shut down the system attendant service first. If you just tell the server to reboot, it will shut down a service, and then another service will need to write something, so it will bring the first service back up. After a few rounds of that it will eventually shutdown.

    • MS Exchange: Disjoint Namespace vs Split DNS

I was reading an article about Exchange 2013 and they mentioned that if you have a "disjoint namespace" you need to do some additional work. It suggested using a GPO to specify and DNS suffix if your internal domain name is different than your external domain name. Is there anything wrong with just adding the external domain to your DNS server like you do with a split DNS configuration?

Whenever I have had a domain.local and a domain.com I just create a zone for each of them on the internal DNS server and that seems to work fine. Any reason not to do that? Is this "disjoint namespace" the same thing?

    • Mac OS X Writing to NTFS

I'm doing a tried and true robocopy /mir to copy files from one server to another. Apparantly a Mac has been writing to a share on the old server. I keep getting these errors:

                  New File 82 ._HistoryBrochure_
      Back copy.jpg

      Access is denied.
      Waiting 1 seconds... Retrying...

It's not a NTFS permissions thing. In fact, the last admin discovered giving everyone full control made things work... I thought the leading . in the file name might be the issue, but renaming the file didn't work.

In fact, that's another odd thing. I can rename the files, but not open them. Any ideas?

    • RE: A Small Orange - bandwidth limit exceded

I think I may have figured it out. The site used to be hosted on an IIS box running .net nuke. .net nuke was vulnerable to users registering themselves and creating a link back to their page. (link juice for SEO optimization) It seems that after I moved the site, they are still trying to hack the registration from when the site was on DNN.

I just updated wordFence to block on the url "/?ctl=register" and /*/Default.aspx so now it's blocking most attempts.

When the printer tries to heat up the fuser from being in power save mode, it probably causes a voltage drop on that circuit.

It sounds like the battery in your UPS is shot or something. If it's more than 3 years old just replace it. If you have the PowerChute software (or what ever it is for your model) you can run a load test and see if the battery can carry the load.

    • Mirror spinning disk to SSD?

I had an HPE drive fail in a server under warranty. I don't have the drive in hand yet, but the field tech told me that the replacement drive is a 1TB SSD. The old drive was a 1TB mechanical. The drives were mirrored.

Can I swap out a HDD for a SSD, let it mirror and then swap out the other HDD? I know in general you want the drives to be identical, and everything will slow down to the HDD, but since it's for a one time mirror, it seems like it could work.

So HP shipped Enterprise HDDs instead of the desktop labeled drives they had in there from the factory. It took a few hours to mirror each drive and it was totally uneventful. - which is exactly what you're looking for in these types of things.
