@iroal said in site to site VPN only works with Keep Alive:

This was one of the reasons we leave sonicwall in the company, apart of the support cost.
Now with Pfsense using VpnSite all problems disappears.

My first choice is Ubiquiti. In this case the Sonics came in under grant money and I had to use them.

I really don't like grant money. It sounds like a good idea, but when you actually see how it works, it's such a waste. As a tax payer I would like to see the system changed. As a tax payer, I would rather see ubiquiti gear and OpenDNS go in than a SonicWall with content filtering and VPN licenses.

    • RE: security cameras using coax?

I think I'm going to try to line up a side by side of a Ubiquiti and one of the 2.1 Mp cameras that runs over coax. Hopefully the Ubiquiti will make it clear it's better to go IP.

    • RE: security cameras using coax?

@JaredBusch I had no idea those adapters existed. I'll have to keep that in mind if I run in to a run where I can't pull the coax out while pulling a piece of Cat 6 behind it. Thanks for the link.

In this project most of the runs aren't too bad and they want to move the NVR anyways. If it's all IP based, that's no problem - the NVR only needs one network drop.

    • RE: The VAR Kickback System and How You Can Make a Good Living from Vendors

I've worked on both as corporate IT and MSP owner. There is a place for corporate IT and a place for an MSP.

The MSP was the clear winner in small companies. Someone trying to do dual roles such as IT and accounting was generally weak in one or the other because they weren't spending enough time on one or the other to become really good at it.

On the corporate side, even if they hired lots of stuff out, they still needed an IT Manager to manage all the IT projects. They knew what was a priority for their business and managed projects accordingly.

I'm thinking NIC firmware/driver issue as well. Could be chipset drivers as well.

Just out of curiosity, is this a white box that you put together, or an off the shelf system? I'm assuming onboard NIC? Do you have another NIC (USB or otherwise) that you can use for testing purposes?

    • RE: Has ConnectWise Set ScreenConnect Adrift as Ghost Ship Software?

Numbers and marketing aside, are there products out there that have had major changes after 6 major releases? I think 90% of the functions people use in Microsoft Word were in version 6.

For the guys trying to host their own screen connect server, why? We try to steer our customers to products in the cloud, why not use them ourselves? I've used Screen Connect that a private company hosted themselves and then started a screen connect subscription. The first thing I noticed is that I got the updates faster from the screenconnect hosted option.

    • RE: NVidia Graphics Card on the Fritz?

Usually if it's heat related, you can get it to boot and work until it warms up, and then it fails. As @Pete-S said, blowing compressed air over it continuously would solve the heat issue if there is one.

I may or may not have done stuff like unplugging the ethernet cable halfway. Putting vaseline on their headset. I also may or may not have spent 2 hours coding my own version of match.com (back when that was a thing) and then updated DNS for the entire office for an elaborate prank.

    • RE: Firewall rules for outgoing traffic

Outside of port 25, the only other time I have to do anything with outbound traffic is when I have load balancing across two ISPs enabled. Applications like voice and some secure sites that don't like the source address bouncing around require that.

    • cordless VoIP

I'm looking for a cordless VoIP solution. It's for a dispatcher that gets a low volume of calls and doesn't want to be tied to the desk. The office has solid wifi, but I think the DECT would work well. It doesn't need to have long talk time, but it should be easy to answer the call and transfer the call. If someone knows of something with a dedicated transfer button, that would be better than fumbling through menus while the caller is sitting there in awkward silence.

I found the Grandstream dp750 + 720 and the Yealink W60P. Does anyone have any experience with either of these or something similar?

Here is an image. The drawing is wildy not to scale. From the Main House to Birch is about 600', thus the multi mode fiber. From Lakeshore 1,2,3 to Lakeview is 115'.0_1541434307574_WirelessPlan.png

I would honestly just run conduit to each location and have everything connect back at the main house.

It's not that much effort, and PVC is stupidly cheap.

The more I think about it, I don't need 1" the entire run, only to the first cottage and then I can leave that cottage with 3/4" to the next one and so on. The only concern then is the distance. The labor to trench is the same no matter the size of the conduit. (at these sizes)

@DustinB3403 The guy that owns the place will run all the conduit. I vacation there. I'd rather be on vacation than digging a ditch. They will probably only need me to terminate everything and configure it.

An Access point for every cabin.

coverage for every cabin. The row of cabins Pine Maple Spruce are so close that doing every other one should work.

FFS. You cannot used pre-terminated cables in pipe.

Do you mean you can't have couplers in the conduit? I would agree. On the other hand, as long as the fiber was outdoor rated, it seems like premade cables like that for the shorter runs makes sense.

    • printer VLAN firewall rules

I have a couple networks where they want users on the guest wifi to be able to print to printers that are currently on the LAN. I was thinking of putting the printers on their own VLAN. For those of you that have done this, what rules are you setting between the VLANS?
