So, you have already opened the drive and observed it in operation? Most likely it's already toast then.

They aren't that sensitive to dust.. Thats a myth. They are sensative to dust in that it hurts their longevity. It doesn't erase the data or make it impossible to read. I have a couple friends who work in data recovery and they all say the clean environment is way over stated if you don't plan on keeping using the drive (which you shouldn't do).

Dust doesn't cause issue with reader, but when dust got under the header and it the speed it spins it can cause a scratch, or shatter.

Same question for DNS as well.

There is no moving DNS. If you made the new DC a DC properly, then it already has all of the DNS.

Now, if you are going to make this new DNS server the primary, then you do need to update that in the DHCP scope as well as in any static assigned devices.

The reason I mentioned DNS is because I don't know what has been done to its configuration. DNS is probably the only section I rarely visit daily.

This seem a bit side tracked from the original question. NUC for Lab Server.

Those reviews don't look that great.

People who usually write reviews are either those who want to pass it forward... and those who don't have anything else better to do, or pissed off customers who said manual transmission is faulty because it doesn't shift gears by itself. or DOA.

When reading reviews make sure you read back at most 6 months. Most likely you will not get the same product from the same batch reviewer received.

Currently our DHCP server reside on an older DC. With all these configurations I want to move it to our new DC (failover cluster) at the same time. Can I skip step #8 and start #9 onward on the new DC?
Or at that point start fresh DHCP is better?
Same question for DNS as well.

This is easy, you just have to plan it out. Note, you cannot "change" the scope of your DHCP server. You can choose to add another or wipe it and reimport it via PowerShell (what I typically do).

      1. Understand what your new range will be. Since you are on X.X.1.X/24. the new scope will be X.X.0.X/23.

      I am abit confuse on the #1. x.x.1.x/24 to x.x.0.x/23. Do you meant x.x.1.x/24 to x.x.1.x/23 ?

I have 80 devices (printers, phones, server) that is on statics. The rest are DHCP. Should I eleminate statics all together and use DHCP reservation instead?
If /23 will double the available range, then /22 should quadruple it right? would you recommend going /22 for future proofing?

    • Switching subnet /24 to /23

We are running out of ip addresses for subnet .1.xx. I know DHCP is capable of performing super cope, or combine subnets. But I think I need to increase subnet mask as well to accommodate the increase IP address range.
What is the pros/cons for going /23 subnet? Should I go even lower?

Yes, you need to add memory and a SSD, in same models you can add and Msata SSD and a 2.5" Harddisk simultaneously

So if the base is $380, a decent SSD is $100 and memory is $70 (which is REALLY high) we are looking at $550 for a recent, very fast Intel i5 processor, 32GB of RAM or more and a screaming fast, current SSD desktop? It's not "OMG how did it get so cheap" but it sounds like a good deal to me, overall.

The problem are the expansions, you cannot add any PCI Express so you cannot change the Graphic card, sound card, add Sata drivers...

But don't get me wrong, I love Intel Nuc, I think my next desktop computer at home will be a Nuc.

The reason I would got with Intel Nuc is its size. I would not plan on expanding anything even if it does come with PCI-E lanes. If graphic cards, sound cards, and other modular components come into play I would get Corsair Compact Case with an ATX motherboard instead. It might cost about the same base price as Intel NUC, but Intel NUC appeals me most with its compact size.
Bottom line question would be what do you plan to use Intel NUC for?

That is what I am getting for Black Friday purchase. Install with Samsung 950Pro. xD

Nice. What are the limitations of using an external GPU dock in that way? That could make for a good, portable gaming system.

I play CS:GO and Heathstone, so I won't need external GPU for my case. Beside a decent monitor to go with it... I don't think there is any significant limitations for NUC and external GPU. Maybe a small projector will make a better sense than monitor.

I think maybe I could just move the heads from the new one? The heads are what's damaged. Moving the platers is more risky since you have to tape them to keep the alignment.

I'm curious, how do you know this?

That make me thinking... how come we never ask "How did you know what is wrong with your harddrive?"

Headers are much much easier. Do it at your own risk!
I take apart a dead hard drive just to try to remove the platter. It is very hard to remove it without proper tool. In the end I did strain the platter with my fingerprint.

As for headers, there are 2 screws (may varies) holding the top magnet plate. As for the header itself there are 2 screws on the logic board, and 1 screw from underneath holding the header in place. 0_1457986776277_2016-03-14 15.20.46.jpg

I do not think it will work for DIY. I have done a Click of Death fix before, but it was due to failed headers.
For starter, I would call couple of drive saver companies throughout the states (assuming you live in U.S.). some may only cost you couple hundreds to a thousand.
If not, I would buy 3 identical drives as to the failed one. The PN, model, year, etc need to be exactly the same for best result. Save a file onto one of the new drive. Do a test platter swap with the test drive on one of the remaining 2 drives (save 1 for your failed drive).

You will also need something like blow pic with some modification. Although it is not required, but you still need a very clean environment. Remember to wear a mask, goggle, and some thing to cover your hair. Dust on a platter is your worst nightmare. You will need to dust very frequently as well.

Add 2 holes and attach them to a vacuum. Use duster or any high pressure air gun to get rid of as much dust as possible.

I ran the update since morning. It has been around 6 hours already. Still no sign of it actually downloading something.

This is a known issue with MS update servers, but I have never seen anything officially posted about it.

A friend of mine that runs his own computer shop uses WSUS Offline. There was a conversation in a thread here lately on this subject.

It's working 😄 may take a while before it's finish.
