    • Building functioning OwnCloud within 24 hours... or less...help?

I asked about Sharepoint couple of weeks ago, and a lot of you guys pointed me to Owncloud. Post here.

SAM pointed me to one of his post here

Problem/error I am having is after login as root and run the first command I receive an error "Could not retrieve mirrorlist mirrorlist http://...). I believe it is related to IP address not configured or conflict. I cannot run ifconfig or yum install net-tools either. Any idea? Do I have to redo the minimal install again?

EDIT: I also found a lot of post with similar problems. How do I configure hosts file (CentOS version)?

EDIT2: Note to everyone net to CentOS... capital letters counts! CentOS_7 must to type the same way it is typed. centos_7 does not work.

Why must a conversation be so political correct (buttercup approached) if it is clearly a jackass conversation.

I don't get involved in those, or I exit them when they take a downward turn. Not worth my time or energy.0_1467134134466_circus.jpg

And what if you end up working for this place? You nor I know where they are, and hopefully the problems are addressed and fixed rather than getting dumped onto the next person in the commanders chair.

I was dumped with a broken infrastructure where everything is IPOD. At that point it becomes "My Monkey. My Circus. Get OUT! Let me do my thing."

Yet I don't feel that we've bashed, we've discussed their topics, and how to address the issues / initially configure the issues.

This has been one of the exceptionally few things that bothers me about this forum. For my two cents I think we should keep the cross linking to a bare minimum and for interesting / news topics only. It does not "feel right" most of the time when I read about posts from there.

This community can be a little... predatory... on the folks less experienced in IT. Well intentioned, absolutely. But a little vicious to the unwary.

Well, this very community IS IT. Also, ML's NodeBB is a very fast paced system, that's another problem / feature.

To take up some cludges for @DustinB3403, it was not him alone. We're all shaking our heads about all the quiz questions, @Dashrender called it "beating a dead horse", just for example.

It's very fast paced and ruthless - which is I think some of this place's best qualities. Just need to be careful we don't "eat our young" as it were.

Very true. No doubt that the pace is the strength. But boy does it put pressure on new posters. Especially if they are used to a slow platform and have no idea that things are basically instant.

If you are used to communities where responses wait for emails to go out on a schedule, then people respond eventually... this place is SO different.

I posted a simple question about SSL certs, and expecting 5-6 replies, but I got A LOT more than I bargain for. In the end I learn of other services, certbot, that answer my question in a different way.

EDIT: let's try not to sidetrack from original topic here. Fastpace forum discussion can be a whole thread by itself.

Some people make mistakes unknowingly, some foresee everything crumbling down and not take any action until it collapsed. As for OP... I would call him an idiot for letting it happens based on the information I have on him...which is nothing, zero, nada. I don't know what kind of situation he is in and I cannot fully call him out for what had happened. But that doesn't changed the fact that it already happened.

He might be short on budget? He might be running on VMWare without proper approval from management or higher ups? I could think of couple reasons as to why he would not/could not get a license for his infrastructure. If it's REALLY important and he neglect it then idiot seem fitting. Again.. I don't know the story behind it.

I feels calling someone dense without reason is out of line, but it's not out of context.

I don't feel like that. I am new to System Admin with little to no experience prior. That was a year ago. I spent 60-70hours a week the first couple months to get me on track and SAM, SW, and Mangolassi-an has been a great help so far. Yes, I made mistakes. Yes, I almost implement IPOD on my infrastructure. But I learned. I grow. All thanks to you guys here (and SW).

Without a very good reason you should never buying a wildcard SSL cert

And those "good" reasons are far less common now with LetsEncrypt as you can get as many non-wild ones as you need.

Can you enlighten me on the LetsEncrypt?

Our certs are expiring soon so we need a new one. That's all. We currently have both EV and Wildcard cert.

So I was tasked to renew our certificate, and was instructed to get Wildcard cert. Any idea where I can get them from? I never done this before so treat me as an amateur for this matter.

Here is something I found online from Trustwave.0_1466521933974_upload-b502185c-bf7b-4620-9c38-7d86f6c11573
      https://ssl.trustwave.com/ssl-premium-ev.php
      https://ssl.trustwave.com/ssl-premium-wildcard.php

But when compared to Digicert's wildcard I feel like I am missing something important factor here.

    • Basic CMD command needs explanation

      @echo off
      copy \server\netlogon\hosts "%systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts /y
      rem type \server\netlogon\hosts >> %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

We use the same domain as our website. When we access out website without www infront it redirect to IIS instead of filling in www.domain.com. Now... we found the above command batch that will solve our issue.

The instruction is to create a file (no extension) and named it hosts. Inside input our website IP address and redirective keyword. Somehow it works! our domain.com become www.domain.com. However I don't understand how it works since hosts file was not altered.

Also what does rem type do? I tried rem type /? in cmd but nothing happens. REM supposed to be a remark command for batch file... but why? How? What? o_O feel so noobish asking this question. LOL *cry in corner *

@coliver I have 2 hypervisors and 3 VMs running at the moment. DC + DNS + DHCP, File server, server for dev team (dunno what they do on there..and dont want to know). Last VM will be for WSUS.

If only Microsoft allows 3 VMs per Hypervisor (standard license) this would save $800 and I can do just as Coliver said. 😞 For now DHCP and DNS has to stay with DC.

      Thanks for all the input.

    • WSUS as a standalone server or inclusive with DC?

After reading Microsoft update KB3159398 thread I wonder if WSUS should be a run on its own server or included in other server/DC?

Right now we have WSUS running on a physical server, and we want to virtualized as well as upgrade all our servers from 2007/2008R2 to 2012R2. I have already virtualized DC (DNS,DHCP, ADDC) and wonder if I should include WSUS with it or create a separate VM for it.

Our current WSUS is running on Windows Server Enterprise (2007 SP2). Once we install new WSUS and configure GPO to point to this new WSUS...is that all?

Any thoughts or tips are greatly appreciated

I used to have a 3 pages long resume... then later I customize each resume per job I am applying for. Say if I am applying for System Admin.. then I won't mention that I used to be in a manager role since that is not what they are looking for (I will still include it under job experience, but not under skill set). Nonetheless I try to fill up at least 1 page. I found too many time that a resume was discard when the hiring manager found skill set that is completely unassociate to job posting.

No feedback on your resume here. Too much reading.
