With root, what does this return:

Where you have /sbin/nologin you need to have /bin/bash instead.

Ok, I edited /etc/passwd to change /sbin/nologin to /bin/bash. No change. When I'm logged in as root and just type scp I'm still getting command not found.

SCP is part of SSH. To use it the account needs to login. Same as SFTP. You can't restrict an SSH account in this way. Nogin blocks SSH completely.

So what do I need to do to fix it?

Okay, SCP definitely exists on CentOS 6.7 so....

Let's start with figuring out what the default shell is.

      What is the output of...

      grep USERNAME /etc/passwd

Where USERNAME is the username of the account that you are using for the SCP connection. This is on the server side.

    • OpenSSH installed, but cannot use SCP

So I'm working up a template for my new XS install, and I need to copy a file over to it. I can ssh to it without any problem. Unfortunately when I attempt to scp the file over it prompts for authentication and then says "command not found". On the remote box I checked and the newest version of OpenSSH-Server is installed.

      Any thoughts?

P.S. At this point I'm less interested in work arounds because I want to learn to work with scp by solving this issue, not simply get the file to the remote server (although that is a goal).

    • RE: Installing Our First Linux Virtual Machine for Learning Systems Administration

It is an onboard SAS controller that I'm trying to install in XenServer during boot. I didn't go into the details because it was just an example of a current issue, and that detail I didn't feel was germane. The XS installer is not seeing the configured arrays, only the drives themselves. Perhaps I should start a new thread...

Something that I'd like a better grasp on is how the mindset is different. Coming from a decade+ of Windows admin work, some of the things that others call easy, or assume that it should be understood, I don't get. There are many examples, but today I ran across an irritating one: installing RAID drivers. In Windows, this is either easy, or undoable. In Linux (during install) it appears to require a significant background. "Just compile from source." is not an easy answer for me at this point because I don't even know where on my mental grid to fit that, much less how to do it for the variety of needed scenarios.

I'm curious what you think of it compared to the first. I really enjoyed it, but I'm uncomfortably familiar with Firaxis' methods of spanking the money tree.

I would start my plan with

      • 1x EdgeRouterLite
      • 1x EdgeSwitch (increase to cover ports needed or add EdgeSwitchLITE for non-PoE)
      • 4x Unifi AP-AC-LITE

      On the ERL

      • eth0 = WAN
      • eth1 = WAN2 (or unused)
      • eth2 = LAN or unused depending on VLAN requirement)
      • eth2.XX = VLAN XX (repeat as needed)

Why Lite over PRO? (I'm not sure if I'm using the right nomenclature)

    • All Ubiquiti, all the time

Well, I'm looking at replacing some aging Cisco gear on site, and seeing Ubiquiti mentioned here reminded me of them again. So, do any of you have any experiential feedback on using their gear? I need new switches, firewall/router, and APs.

      Requirements:
      ~50 employees
20 Mb/s internet (Could go higher)
~100 wireless devices in a building being covered by 4 Cisco APs
Multiple VLANs, would need at least 1 L3 switch

      Thanks

At less than 200ppm - why not look at a local printer such at Staples or Office Depot? Limited use could spell higher costs per page due to ink waste.

We frequently have to print things that contain sensitive data, so using a service for those jobs is not feasible.

Are you looking for color or b/w only?

      Color

Is this something that's going to be used sporadically or more regularly?

Fairly infrequently. I'm guessing the duty cycle is going to be below 200 PPM.

So we're looking for a new color printer that can handle 11x17 printing. We do not need brochure or photo quality, just something reasonably priced (initially, and over time). Any suggestions or ones to avoid?
