I can see your point about the language but if that was the case then it did not last long. The fundamentals of the language are easily learned and after that it was just problem solving. Thats how my classes went. We would pick up enough language as we needed and then concentrated on problems. I was also doing calculus and physics at same time and those were harder than computer science.

@scottalanmiller I have no real experience in R but python works and is popular these days. Baylor did c and c++ mostly when I was there and those helped my problem solving a lot I felt along with all the calculus I took. I also am of the opinion that those lower level languages help with problem solving better than higher level languages like python. I like python but I just dont feel like it would have helped me as much as c++ in that regard.

For a program in IT I am going to have to say business, calculus, and a bit of programming for algorithm analysis and problem solving.

@scottalanmiller Yeah it has been out a really long time. Probably not real useful for IT directly but it helps with problem solving which is more important in my opinion.

@storageninja I went to Baylor and thought they had a good program. It was mostly business with a bit of programming mixed in. I often "had" to help the girls figure out visual c++

@scottalanmiller That is exactly why i wanted to learn something like this so it will translate a little to other products. At those prices there is no reason not to just buy one.

Thanks for all the info. I just have a consumer EnGenius at home and though i havent had a single issue it isn't business grade and I want to start learning more business equiipment and i don't mind investing in myself to learn though i thinik my current router was more expensive than the Edge lite.

Ok thanks. My goal is to learn the general side of things until I have a reason to specialize, which i do not at the moment. I am just trying to learn what makes the most sense right now.

Well question about this then. Is the EdgeRouter that your talking about here good for a home lab to learn networking fundamentals from?

    • RE: Open Source LAMP Web Hosting Panels

I have never used a panel before. I experimented once because people kept raving about it. Think I was trying to set up a database or something. It was too counter-intuitive and I couldn't figure out how to use it. I've used cli ever since.

    • RE: Is the CompTIA A+ Certification Right for IT? SAMIT Video

I did the A+ and it was instrumental in getting my helpdesk position. Not sure what that says about where I work at but at the time my job had just been ended and I needed something. I do think the A+ helps a lot if you do helpdesk though, you quickly analyze situations and know how to narrow things down quicker. However, as in Scott's certification video,I had a big thick book and really went over it in detail and took things about apart at home to see what the book was talking about each time. Took me about 6 months to do it but I was the only person at my company to pass it the first time they took it.

Runing Fedora 26 in my vm so since that is not CentOs that could be the issue even though they are similar. I just can't find out what yet.

    • RE: Installing osTicket 1.10 on CentOS 7

@scottalanmiller Yes sir I am. Redid the whole installation process, by following your guide, and still get same thing. I disabled selinux, restarted vm, then checked with getenforce and it said disabled. So searching around to try and find clues about what I did wrong.

You are entirely correct. The people like that it seems will not even consider anything else and would rather pay big license fees than learn other systems.

    • RE: Certifications for IT SAMIT Video

For context, I came from the AV world where there were much fewer certifications but lost that job when the company went out of business so then I picked up a job in IT as helpdesk and here i am, starting over and learning continually, which I love anyway.
